When the women of the Tribe of the Horse die from polluted water, the young men kidnap women from the matriarchal Tribe of the Red Deer to keep their clan from extinction. The success of the raid causes dissention in the male ranks of the Tribe of the Horse. Mar, the leader of the younger men, must deal with the tribal conflict, as well as his feelings for Alin, the beautiful daughter of the Red Deer priestess and ``Chosen One'' of the Mother Goddess. Resolution of the conflict between the generations, the sexes, the gods, and Alin and Mar make fascinating reading.

Joan Wolf is a USA TODAY bestselling American writer, whose acclaimed Regency romances have earned her national recognition as a master of the genre. Her many historical and contemporary romances, some of which have been chosen as Literary Guild selections, have been highly praised by reviewers and authors alike.

Joan was born in 1951 and she grew up in the Bronx, New York. A former English teacher, she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Mercy College and Master in English and Comparative Literature at Hunter College. An avid rider and horse owner, Joan lives in Connecticut with her husband Joe and two grown children, Jay and Pam.

I read this book at first with a bit of apprehension, would it turn into a "men are evil and women are sinless" kind of a story?
I am happy to say it did not. It is a fresh story of love and partnership set in ancient France 14,000 years ago. Alin and Mar learn to see eye to eye in their two seperate views of life. A good yarn followed by the just as good "The Horsemasters", which is set several years later.(the young girl Fali is now the Old One)

An enchanting tale about life in prehistoric France. How tribes interacted and customs change. A love story with a great ending. I enjoyed this book more than Jean Auel's books. Quicker paced, harder to put down.

I read this book in my late teens and found it to be completly spell-binding. My first book that actully held me with pleasure for reading! Note; i do not believe that this book is sutiable for people under 16 years of age. But for us adults, it is wonderfull!
