"they make a tangled, jangled racket together, but they do so with a serious sense of melody." —Stereogum

"a perfectly calibrated statement of purpose from the duo, a speedy, off-kilter slice of garage pop that warmly vibrates with tactile webs of guitars, snappy key changes, and harmonies, wrapped up in Schmersal's charming falsetto" - ... Read more in Amazon's Vertical Scratchers Store

Editorial Reviews

Vertical Scratchers is John Schmersal (ex-Brainiac/Enon, live Caribou, and Crooks on Tape) and Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!/Anywhere). A persistent elements you will hear throughout the record is the percussive nature in which the guitars were played and recorded. Guitar playing is vertical scratching, and in this band, the guitar strums are almost louder than the amps. John explains, "Part of the aesthetic we were establishing when writing Vertical Scratchers songs was to maintain a sense of urgency and raw energy without relying on volume and distortion.

Song after song after song goodness. If you like short sweet loud scratchy pop this is for you. One of the best essence of rock albums this year.

3.0 out of 5 stars raw, loose & reckless indie/garage slacker rock March 20, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Debut release from California band—raw, loose & reckless indie/garage slacker rock with a
consistently hook-driven pop core. The songs are mostly short, melodic bursts of lo-fi energy
that exist just long enough to startle and intrigue, then disappear without a trace of memory.
Members have played in Enon, Crooks On Tape, Brainiac, Triclops!. Recalls bands like Guided
By Voices, Superchunk, Spoon, Pavement, the Kinks.
