One of those stories that stay with you!,
By Pio (Orange County, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Daughter of Fortune (Hardcover)
I am a Regency Romance reader and an avid fan of Carla Kelly's. Because she wrote this novel, I decided to try it even though nothing about the storyline attracted me. When I read romance, I almost exclusively read Regencies. But her writing is so outstanding, I tried this book set in Mexico and in what is now present-day New Mexico with the Spanish and Indians duking it out but not how you saw in Westerns. This was painful for both sides and Kelly brings it all to life. This book was superb and very informative historically. The hero, heroine and some secondary characters tear your heart out while they endure a lot. I am not one for lots of anguish in my recreational reading; that's why I like Regencies. But this story and the writing was so exceptional that by the end I really was glad I had read it. The story and its poignancy has stayed with me even years later.

Excellent book!,

This review is from: Daughter of Fortune (Paperback)
My first book that I read by Carla Kelly was The Lady's Companion. I fell in love with Ms. Kelly's writing style at that time. She doesn't write a book that I wouldn't give to my girls to read. After reading The Lady's Companion, I decided to try her other books and became hooked. I then put forth the effort to get a hold of all of her works. I finally got this book, Daughter of Fortune, through Amazon's out-of-print books department. At first I was disappointed (this was before I read the book) because it wasn't a Regency romance but I decided to read it anyway. I fell in love with it and now it is one of my favorite works by this author. I think Ms. Kelly is one of those unsung authors that write excellent prose but the publishing companies want more flash than style. This book is extremely well written and historically accurate. I would recommend this book to anybody. And as Ms. Jaramillo said, if you can get a hold of this book, don't let go of it.

A fantasic book,

This is not a Regency like her later works. The book is set in the 1600's. It is extremely powerful and moving. There are some grisly scenes so beware. Ms. Kelly is one of the most talented writers around today. If you can find this book I suggest you hold on to it.

I had been looking for this book for several years. i have long been a fan of Carla Kelly's. Her stories are great. Her characters are fully developed,& the romance is woven in seamlessly. I had pretty much given up romantic fiction, but Ms. Kelly's books kept me coming back for more.
This book is completely different from her regencies, but it's outstanding. Some of the parts are brutal, as it deals with an actual historic event, the Pueblo Uprising of the late 1600's in New Mexico. I flew through the book; it was hard to put down. The hero & heroine go through some devastating experiences before coming together; the writing is so engaging that you can picture the events as they unfold. This book was well worth the money,& well worth checking half-price book stores & websites for out of print books. |
