Book Description

1972
"Daughter Buffalo" is Janet Frame's only book set in the United States--in New York, where she once resided. The theme of human attitudes toward death is depicted through the eyes of the American narrator, Dr. Talbot Edelman. Ms. Frame suggests that rather than face the fact of death, we try to hide from it, to sweep it under the rug.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

New Zealander Frame's 1972 novel Daughter Buffalo , her only work set in America, relates in an original fashion a doctor's reaction to a patient's death; The Adaptable Man , first published in 1965, contrasts an alienated young murderer with his antiquated father and uncle.

Review

As in previous novels...the author examines conventional attitudes toward death with both satire and wistful poetry. -- Time Magazine

She writes with a beauty that confers a morbid grandeur, that makes poetry of the particular, the private, the enclosed. And she has written a novel as gleaming as pure, black, shattered glass. -- The New York Times --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars An impressive book from a most gifted artist, May 1, 2000

This review is from: Daughter Buffalo (Paperback)
In this novel, her only one to take place in the United States, Dr. Frame explores death and it's care takers in dream-like prose. Her vision, insight and gift for language is unparralelled.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique Writer, August 21, 2010

This review is from: Daughter Buffalo (Paperback)
I never heard of Jnet Frame until I saw the biographical movie "Angel at my Table" about her life.
I liked her writing because it is unlike any other writer, she has a different slant on everything and her use of language is
equally unique and well crafted.
