Book Description

September 1982
Petra Channing - ebony haired, porcelain-fragile daughter of Em's child Martha and the Chinese war lord who abducted her, has wandered into peril in the opium-filled streets of San Francisco's Chinatown. Missie Navaez - daughter of Arab, has left Australia and come to San Francisco to become a writer. Her book places the daughters in a different kind of danger. Based on the McLeods' lives, it is a labor of love, but the press sees it as a scandal to be exploited. The telling of the tale could destroy the reputation the daughters have struggled to build through the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars The daughters are returning home to San Francisco., December 11, 1998

This review is from: Daughters of the Shining City (Paperback)
This is the sixth book in the series about the daughters: Emmeline, Tamsen and Arabella. This book does have the story line wrapped around these characters, but we also have two new comes. Melissa, Arab's daughter, makes an appearance as one of the main characters. She has been living in San Francisco with Em and her family since they left Australia. During her stay there she has written a book entitled "the Survivors" detailing the escapades of Em, Tamsen and Arab. This book deals around "the Survivors" book and how these three sisters, who are now in their seventies, are going to deal with their past, as black as it was, being brought into the open. Melissa becomes the main focal point of the entire book. These sisters are either going to hate her or see the book she wrote as a tribute, the way she meant it. Then there is Petra, Em's granddaugther, who comes on the scene. Petra feels her family has deserted her and sent her off to her grandma because they are ashamed that she is half chinese and not the daughter of Peter Chaning, the father she thought he was. Petra runs off to Missie's and then after hearing a conversation, runs off to china town to find "her own people". This book also features Nell, the daughter's beloved adopted mother figure. Nell takes on a whole new life as she adopts a street bum, Maggie. After finding Maggie is expecting a baby she gets Maggie a husband for that baby, Sean. This book will keep you laughing and cry. But even now, as the sisters are growing old, they have a lesson to learn. As you finish your stay at San Francisco you can then journey to France as World War I breaks out and meet a new generation of daughters in Daughters of the Storm.

I enjoyed this book having just visited San Francisco. Great way to learn about the city's past and woman's first steps toward an honest career.
