Book Description

January 15, 2000
No book can guarantee you a long and happy relationship, even if the author didn't know about your secret hygiene problem. But the cover of a book is no place to discuss that. In Dave Barry's Guide to Marriage and/or Sex, one of America's most beloved writers turns his keen, if somewhat rheumy, eye to the institution of marriage.

Dating. "These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean that it is the responsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressively more obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chew on a rat pancreas."

Sex. "I'm afraid that we must talk here about sex in a very explicit manner, because we want to expand the Frontiers of Human Understanding, and also we want to sell as many books as possible to adolescent boys."

Marriage. "Most squabbles start with money. For example, you want to buy food, while your spouse wants to buy a thoroughbred racehorse. It's important, in these situations, for both of you to be willing to sit down and try to achieve a workable compromise. In this case, you could buy a thoroughbred racehorse and eat it."

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Dave Barry's humor speaks for itself. Barry on dating: "These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean that it is the responsibility of the man to ask for the date, and the responsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressively more obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chew on a rat pancreas." Barry on falling in love: "When two people have been on enough dates, they generally fall in love. You can tell you're in love by the way you feel: your head becomes light, your heart leaps within you, you feel like you're walking on air, and the whole world seems like a wonderful and happy place. Unfortunately these are also the four warning signs of colon disease, so it's always a good idea to check with your doctor." If you think you might be in danger of having a date, falling in love, or getting married, buy this book immediately.

From Publishers Weekly

Syndicated columnist Barry is just as funny here as in his previous humor books, Babies and Other Hazards of Sex and Claw Your Way to the Top. With a jaundiced eye, he comments on dating and marriage: opening lines ("How about that Middle East?"); French kissing ("a really sexy thing to do, according to the French people, although you should bear in mind that they also like to eat snails"); Disney World honeymoons ("They say 'honeymooning in Florida' because they don't want people to know that the highlight of the whole wild lustful romantic adventure was shaking hands with Goofy"); grounds for divorce ("wearing shorts and black knee socks at the same time"). In addition to the litany of love-life lunacies, there are O'Brien's 60 entertaining illustrations, including maps, pie charts, cartoons, diagrams and comic strips. A "funny index" not seen by PW. More About the Author

The New York Times has pronounced Dave Barry "the funniest man in America." But of course that could have been on a slow news day when there wasn't much else fit to print. True, his bestselling collections of columns are legendary, but it is his wholly original books that reveal him as an American icon. Dave Barry Slept Here was his version of American history. Dave Barry Does Japan was a contribution to international peace and understanding from which Japan has not yet fully recovered. Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys is among the best-read volumes in rehab centers and prisons. Raised in a suburb of New York, educated in a suburb of Philadelphia, he lives now in a suburb of Miami. He is not, as he often puts it so poetically, making this up.

Though not as good as his later works, definitely worth buying, though 'Dave Barry's Guide To Life' is also availiable on Amazon.com and contains this and three other works of similiar quality and length by the same author, while being slightly cheaper than this edition alone.
Recommended.

Another classic Barry. The title alone should give it five stars, but the content overwhelms my funny bone.

At one point, I was falling out of my chair I was laughing so hard!

oh well....5 STARS

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave Barry's wry view of marriage, March 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dave Barry's Guide to Marriage and/or Sex (Paperback)
Anyone who has ever read a Dave Barry article can appreciate this book for his silly observations to his dry wit. You have to be either really smart or have a really good sense of humor to get Dave Barry, but the book definitely isn't meant for the politically correct. If you're a fan, you'll find yourself laughing and agreeing with Mr. Barry as he tackles all the subjects of sex and marriage. I couldn't recommend this book more, but then again, what do I know? I'm not even married. Just goes to show that Dave Barry can make anyone laugh about anything he writes about.
