Just watch the damn movie instead,

NO KANYE, NO CODY CHESSNUT, NO FUGEES, NO C.S.U. MARCHING BAND...these were the highlights of the film! Don't get me wrong--they put some good performances on this CD, but come on...would you buy PE's "It Takes a Nation of Millions" if it had no "Bring the Noise," "Prophets of Rage" or "Rebel Without a Pause?"
Just put the movie on in another room and listen to it...it's better than this chopped-up soundtrack. It doesn't capture ANY of the raw energy, The power or the impromptu jamming (except for "You Got me"). The sound quality is better on the movie, too. Great film, bad soundtrack.

Dave Chappelle Throws A Party,
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to Dave Chappelle's Block Party with hip hop acts that put on great live performances. The Roots are the stars of the album with some first rate songs including the amazing "You Got Me" that has both Erykah Badu (who sang on the original) and the flawless Jill Scott (who co-wrote the song) and "Boom" with a great teaming of hip hop pioneers Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap. Mos Def and Talib Kweli reunite as Blackstar and perform some solo songs. Not all the artist from the event are included on the album most notably Kanye West and The Fugees who reunited for the event.

For True Hip-Hop Fans,

This is a great CD to own if you are a true fan of Hip-Hop and not all that fake crap that is played on the radio. The only complaint I could possibly have about this album is that the fugees and a couple other songs from the movie were not on it. Even still it is a great compulation of artists and songs. One last thing I have to get off my chest, mistermaxxx if you really believe that Dave put these artists together because he couldn't afford to get "legit" acts, you are sadly mistaken. If you payed any attention to Dave's show and the people dave talks about when he mentions music, these are his favorite artists, and for good reason, these are the premeir artists on the hip-hop scene. Each and everyone of these people have something important to say and do it in a beautiful and intelligent manner. So if you enjoy good music I highly recommend this cd!

For the Love of Music,
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
I love this CD for its true and honest showing of the wide spectrum of Hip hop music. Often only one facet of hip hop music is played on radio outlets. These artist combined is truly a work of art. They perform from their soul, and all to often that is missing in today's radio outlets. No the sound quality of this cd is not perfect, but you can really feel the excitement of the performances. In the end I hope that this CD really promotes the changing of how music is perceived in media outlets. Music can change lives and hearts, and I love that each of these muscians use their gift to promote important social issues. And for that reason alone this CD is worth more than its weight in gold. It is about progress not perfection, and this is a work of progress.

Great Songs but lots of excess talk,
By Lotus (California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
I love all the songs on the album, I bought this after first watching the movie...It contains all the best hip hop/soul artists there that were involved but the one thing is that about each track has extra talk before or after the song actually plays...such as a few mins of dave chappelle and other music artists just chatting on the phone on 3 way or 4 way, it's really nonsense but you have to wait through it until the music/song actually starts...that's what I don't like about the album.

Now THIS is a Block Party!!!!,

Now I'm a huge Dave Chappelle fan. Even when he decided to drop off the face of the earth last year, I still stood behind him. He's a mastermind on stage, in movies, and on television. So the next thing for him to do is to branch out and try new things like his recent movie Dave Chappelle's Block Party. I haven't seen the movie, but it's got be great since the soundtrack is basically the performances from the movie. I heard from one person that saw the movie that the live performances weren't in their entirety. Well, the soundtrack fills the void left from the movie.
Everything from Black Star's "Definition," Dead Prez's certified classic "Hip-Hop," Jill Scott's "Golden" and "The Way," Mos Def with both "Universal Magnetic" and the crossover hit "Umi Says," Talib Kweli's "The Blast," Common's reuniting with Erykah Badu and Bilal for a live extended version of "The Light," Erykah Badu on "Back In The Day," and The Roots reuniting with Erykah Badu and Jill Scott for "You Got Me." The Roots enlist Big Daddy Kane and Kool G. Rap for "Boom" while Black Star give us "Born And Raised," a new song that apparently wasn't included in the film for some reason. Dave Chappelle's Block Party is a collection of live hits that have helped shape the underground and mainstream Hip-Hop and R&B scene for the last eight years. If you want to take a trip down memory lane with some of the best live instrumentation and lyrics, this is the soundtrack for you.

Great Live Disc,
By S. "strap" (Honolulu, HI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
I must say that before Block Party, I was not a Dave Chappelle fan...for no other reason than the fact that I've never heard him perform, despite all the rave reviews I've heard about his show. I also had not read a review of Block Party, so I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, this was one hella great film, with great music and some funny comedy...so I had to get this CD. Although it doesn't have all the great performances at Dave's Block Party (specifically lacking the Fugees reunion and Kanye West), the CD is still great with the Roots providing the backbone to this outstanding live set.
This has to be the best live CD I've heard since the Three Pickers album...I'd recommend it, but I don't think the audiences for these genres overlap all that much.

Ya Gotta Love It!,

Dead Prez, Jilly from Philly, Erykah Badu,Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Common, Bilial, Roots Crew, I mean you can't go wrong. The jazzy rendition of Jill's delivery was extra special and the new Black Star contribution was awesome. I was also disappointed by the exclusion of the Fugees track which I think was a draw to purchase this CD, if I had known it would not included I might have waited on the DVD and it is why this rating is not 5. Nevertheless, I am impressed and satisfied because of there efforts to save the substance of the genre we call hip hop...........inspired from RAP. I will always love and respect Badu for "Back in the Day" because of it's smooth delivery, so underground.

Average sound quality; superior music,
By Miss Crispy (Iowa City, IA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
Like most reviewers, I was disappointed by the lack of Fugees and Kanye West and the sound quality. However, I've got to agree with the reviewers who liked the album/DVD for what is included. I'm a 38-year-old white woman who dismissed all rap as misogynisitic, violence inciting, and just plain vulgar. This DVD and soundtrack have opened my eyes to the really creative hip-hop that is out there. I went out and bought not just this CD, but also CDs from The Roots, Badu, and Mos Def. (Imagine the clerk's confusion when included in the pile were CDs from the Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakam, Calexico, and Nina Simone!)

Hmmmmmm Where is Kanye and The Fugees?,
By
This review is from: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (Audio CD)
I loved the movie and the soundtrack is descent. However where is Kanye West and the Fugees on this soundtrack. A major draw for the movie was to see the fugees perform together again why were they not included on the soundtrack? The sound track is still good despite their absence but I was a little dissapointed that they didn't make the final cut.
