I'm only halfway through this collection of essays and I already remember why I'm here. A similar thing happened the other day on the Museum. My blood pressure must have dropped and I found myself leaning against the wall and looking sideways at the surface of a Helen Frankenthaler. For a moment I remembered an old feeling for paint laying on canvas.

Hickey is one of my very favorite writers on art and the art world. I didn't enjoy this quite as much as The Invisible Dragon but the perspective on american art and culture is interesting.

Hickey has the gift of gab, but like any womanizing, cokehead, self-anointed pirate loudly proclaiming truth from the perch of his barstool, his bluster wears thin. Pretty soon it's 2am and you wish he would just shut up and go home so you can have a real conversation with someone who listens. But if you find that sort of character to be a good antidote to the academic atmosphere of artistic discourse, his writing is colorful enough to keep you going. Just don't expect a book about art, or even culture. Hickey's true subject is himself.
