4.0 out of 5 stars A Middle of the Road Sax Player, October 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
Musically, Koz seems to fit about halfway between Kenny G. and David Sanborn on this CD. He lacks the hard jazz edge of Sanborn, but avoids the lightweight fluff of Kenny. The result is a pleasing, if variable mix, of that "soft jazz sound".

The interesting part, though, is that Koz himself seems to realize he's not a strong enough player to carry a whole instrumental album. The result is tunes like "Yesterday's Rain" and "Nothing But the Radio On", which features vocals and has Koz's excellent playing merely as background fodder -- very good background fodder, but fodder all the same.

Still, this CD is a great one to relax to, especially in front of a nice fire with someone you would like to make your significant other. Then maybe you too can have "Nothing But The Radio On"...

4.0 out of 5 stars New Jazz Ager, June 8, 2001
This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
Before recording this debut album, Dave played on albums by acts as disparate as Joan Armatrading, U2, Ray Charles, Donny Osmond, Richard Marx and Gladys Knight & The Pips. On this album he is supported by experts Jeff Lorber (keyboards), Buzz Feiten (guitar), Randy Jackson (bass) and Tom Scott (sax) plus vocal contributions from Cole Basque and Joey Diggs. Koz plays the sax with gusto and his scope includes the full spectrum of pop, jazz and R&B. There's no doubt he enjoys what he's doing - on the track Love Of My Life, for instance, the mix of funky beat and Ms Basque's piercing vocal creates an effect not unlike that of Prince or Michael Jackson. Very exuberant.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite CD, May 10, 2003
This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
Usually, musicians' debut CD's are not the greatest. Dave Koz is the exception. Two of my all-time favorite songs, Perfect Stranger and Give it Up are on this CD. Also good are Emily, Endless Summer Nights and Love of My Life. Dave brings a funky, pop feel to these songs that Kenny G could never do. If you buy one smooth jazz CD, get this one.

I was just introduced to Dave's music by a friend and have enjoyed it so much I went out and bought two other of his CD's. I can listen to his music at work, home or in the car. Thank you, Dave, for your gift of music.

This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
This saxman is maybe a follower of DAVID SANBORN.I suppose that he respects him in many ways. The arranger of this CD is JEFF LORBER.That's why the contents of these music is electronically funky and vocal oriented. But the problem is DAVE KOZ doesn't have his sinature sound approach here. His too powerful and monotonous blow makes me a little bit sloopy. So overall JEFF LORBER'S arrangement helps the weak point of this CD.
Not an excellent album, but a kitchin BGM. I recommend this CD to all the people who want to have fun in the kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anybody who hates Kenny G, June 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
Dave Koz is the coolest jazz artist of the 1990s. Unlike that marshmallow Kenny G, Koz can make any song exciting. I love his work with the alto saxophone. Anytime he picks it up, he adds vivid color to the song. I love "Give It Up," "Nothing But the Radio On," "Castle of Dreams," and "Perfect Stranger." I hope Dave Koz makes albums as good as this. And I definitely hate Kenny G, because he's just a boring pile of trash!

Dave is a great smooth jazz saxophone player, unlike Kenny G you know the legatoman(the songs is so melankolist). Dave's mix anykind of music to his songs..that's makes him soo good about it and recently he came to my country, Indonesia, i met him and talk to him, he's a nice character and a great man..

Heard Dave Koz on Satelite Radio smooth jazz show. Enjoyed the selection and bought the CD. Have been listening to it in my car. Has a nice mix of very appealling instrumental smooth jazz cuts, with an occassional vocal. The vocals add nothing and could have been omitted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Jazz fan?`, June 8, 2002

Me, neither. But one of my friends had this cd, and I thought I'd pop it in because my name is the title of track 2. I got hooked. Jazz isn't my favorite, but this CD is awesome. Saxophones are incredible by themselves, but Dave Koz is invincible. Definitely a first rate buy. Go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary jazz that really has personality..., November 21, 1999

JAY (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dave Koz (Audio CD)
Dave Koz puts out a tune that really wants to say something to the listener. Tracks like 'So Far From Home' and 'Castle of Dreams' put an image in your head and let you just float away...So much different than other sax artists who create 'white noise' jazz that just sits there in the background. I've listened to contemporary jazz for only a few years and I've always fallen back to Dave Koz. Definitely a 'gotta have it' for your contemporary jazz collection.
