Editorial Reviews

Before this Greenwich Village folk doyen recorded for Prestige, he made a splash with his Smithsonian Folkways LPs. He came to be revered for these kinds of new spins on old blues and jazz classics: Hesitation Blues; Black Mountain Blues; My Baby's So Sweet; Come Back Baby; Winin' Boy; Willie the Weeper 20 tracks!

My first exposure to Dave Van Ronk, although I've known his name for years. Definitely a winner for those interested in roots folk/blues. Fabulous unique and creative guitar rhythms blend perfectly with Van Ronk's rough voice. Mostly obscure songs from the early 1900s learned from friends and off the street - a plus for me. The album includes a sheet of comments about the songs.
My favorite: "Just a Closer Walk with Thee", the old spiritual done as never before.

I admit it. I LOVE Dave Van Ronk's music.... his styling, playing and singing .... I even like what I know about him from the book about him mentioned in the title of this review. I associate him and his music with my own coming-of-age in the early 60's. His music was gritty, tuneful and 'real' in a way that sharply contrasted the neatly produced works of such contemporaries as Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez and The Kingston Trio. His sound spoke to the way I wanted to see myself - and today, at 60, I still listen to it quite a bit and enjoy playing my own renditions of these tunes on both the 6 and 12 string guitar. A necessary addition to any folk music collection!

nothing special,he has an old mans voice, why settle on this when you can get authentic blues,he takes lyric from old timers and twiste them into his own. not bad if you want some blues.some of his stuff is worth buying because he is very unique.he is overall inconsistant but when he is good he is excellent.

Dave has a mighty voice, a nifty guitar style and a really wonderful choice of material. Whether you want to learn these songs or just soak up the pleasure of listening to a folk virtuoso then get this album. I guarantee you will enjoy it

Dave Van Ronk sings many of his "classics". Recorded in 1959, you'll enjoy the music but; the soud quality is rather poor. Later recordings of the same material are much better.

Dave played at a coffee house in Huntington Beach. Remember going there one night and listened to him. We had his album. Another famous coffee house at the time was in Balboa. Sandy and her husband ran it. Coffee house was downstairs and they lived upstairs. This was before the big Rondezvous burned down. Five of us guys were renting the downstairs portion of a huge Victorian style house in Balboa. On the boardwalk. No boards. Just sidewalk, sand and then the ocean. We split $150 a month. That was in the mid 60s. I went on to write a couple of books. What the heck. They are free over at cedarpost.com. Even donations are NOT accepted. Just read them if you feel like it. Tell your friends. That's cool enough for me.

Some CD's get a play and are pretty much history - Not this one - It's close to a classic
