5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Dave

Dave's Way is a book written exclusively by Dave Thomas himself- the late restaurant entrepreneur and founder of the Wendy's chain. As the president of a business, I am always interested in autobigoraphies, or business advice from more experienced and successful leaders.

This book contains some of the best advice I have come across. It is very down to earth, has a simple style - but that's Dave's way! As straightforward as the writing, the homespun wisdom and advice is not trendy, it is the type that will hold true in 50 years or 50 years in the past. However, it is NOT common knowledge and I learned many valuable lessons.

Read it if you are a CEO or a kitchen manager in a fast food restaraunt - either way you will have more insight into life in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daves Book, January 23, 2000
This review is from: Dave's Way (Paperback)
A very inspirational book with great information for those who want to succeed in the business world. Also for someone who is interested in reading about how Dave arrived at where he is today. People who have been adopted would also be inspired by his book. This is one of my favorite books on business success, Ive read it two times. One of my other favorites is Think And Grow Rich, which I have read at least two times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for everyone, November 18, 2003
This review is from: Dave's Way (Paperback)
When it comes to business literature there are three kinds of writers:

1. Those who did it and write about it: business owners and entrepreneurs
2. Those who read about it: journalists, business books writers, and historians
3. Thos who think about it: professors, researchers, and think tanks

Every single of has their own merit and contribution to the world of business history, but for me it is very important as a business professional to learn from the people who did it. What were they thinking? What where they feels? Why?

The other two kinds of writers can tall you what they did and how but they can never tell you why?

Which is why I recommend reading books like "Dave's Way." Dave Thomas tells us his version of what, how, and most importantly why he built Wendy's.

He starts out his adulthood in the military service where he meets a young man drawing sketches of a mouse (I will let you guess who he is). Along the way, he hitches a ride with KFC's legendary founder and mascot the Connell.

As the book goes on we learn about the guiding principles that guided him in this life and business. We learn about why he started Wendy and answers to many other questions if you are a fan of his restaurant.

It is a heart-warming book and a tribute to a great man.

Let's face it, he did it right....this book is full of insightful recommendations and ideas for the self starter. I remember most his caveat: Don't give the customer too many choices! How often I have seen that good idea not used, and the confusion and frustration of too many items, too many options, too many choices. "With this you get that but you don't get the other thing. If you want to get the other thing, you have to get this and that and the "other" other thing....too many colors, too many fragrances, too much BS! Set up a few categories, with a few choices in each, and Keep It Simple! Rule number 2 for all you knucklheads out there ignoring a paying customer to talk on the phone: The ringing of the cash register takes priority over the ringing of the phone!

This is an easy to read, easy to understand, and enjoyable book. I highly recommend to anyone in the service industry (aren't we all, in one way or another?), and to anyone in business, or wanting to start up a business. Hell, I recommend it to anyone, period, the book is full of good ideas about not only business but how to get along and seize opportunites. You can't argue with a billionaire, now, can you?

2.0 out of 5 stars Dave's Way Works in His Restuarants, but Not in His Writing, July 6, 2006

This review is from: Dave's Way (Paperback)
Dave's Way is a book written exclusively by Dave Thomas himself- the late restaurant entrepreneur and founder of the Wendy's chain. Thomas was great as a businessman and philanthrapist but he isn't very effective with this book. The book is full of run- on sentences and sentence fragments and the style of writing is a little too casual, written in a manner that's similar to having a casual, spoken conversation. The book would have been much better if someone had been hired to edit the book and make it appear to be more professional.

Each chapter of this book contains lists, and while some of them contain helpful advice, others are pretty boring and get in the way of the meat of the book. You will find lists like "Five steps to getting over shyness", "Six steps for bringing back a dying business", "Dave's rules for making a good ad", and many more. Most of what is contained in these lists is very obvious and I doubt that many people will discover anything earth- shattering when they read them.

Thomas doesn't delve much into his personal life, except for the part about adoption. He doesn't talk much about his family members, either. There are a few family photos in the center of the book, but little else is mentioned about family. The book mostly centers around lists of advice for business and life. It also talks briefly about the advertisements that helped give Wendy's a permanent place in American culture. Who could forget, for example, actress Clara Pellar and her famous line, "Where's the Beef"? It was one of the most memorable and successful ad campaigns in fast- food history.

I like Dave Thomas, and I like Wendy's Restaurants. I admire Dave for overcoming adversity. I like Dave's calm, easy- going demeanor and his drive to be the best. But the book could have been better. Don't get me wrong- I love the Wendy's chain and I have complete respect for its founder. But this book could/should have been written better than it was.

Clara Pellar had a hard time finding the beef that was lost inside a large hamburger bun. Likewise, I had a hard time finding the beef in "Dave's Way". It does present a few good words of advice on business, but it's a below- average book overall, full of sub- par writing and too lacking in information about the company and its founder, Dave Thomas. It leaves you wanting to know more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave's Way, A Unique Author who made a Fortune in Business., January 27, 2005

This review is from: Dave's Way (Paperback)

My opinion of the book, Dave's Way, was that almost anyone can enjoy it because it's about the restaurants. I got this book because it was interesting on how Dave's way made a fortune on restaurants. He was the guy who named and was the owner of the restaurant, "Wendy's". I think this book will get really in to it, on how step by step he went really far.
I liked almost everything about this book, especially when he started working in a restaurant at such an early age. Since he was small he liked cooking. I think the whole book was good, there wasn't any boring or any part that I didn't liked. I really enjoyed reading this book about Dave's Way.
