Editorial Reviews

Welcome back to Dave's World, an amiable Baby Boomer sitcom that takes a more laid-back approach to life and parenting. In the season finale, "Tommy Doesn't Live Here Anymore," Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry (Harry Anderson) is told that his 10-year-old son, angry that he is forbidden to see an age-inappropriate horror movie, has run away and shown up on the doorstep of Dave's editor and best friend. "That's something we should have noticed, right?" he asks his wife, Beth (DeLane Matthews). As with the first season, season two takes its inspiration from Barry's books, Dave Barry's Greatest Hits and Dave Barry Turns 40. The best episodes stay closest to home, with Barry grappling with "decisions in life that really count," such as whether to get a vasectomy, coping with the after-effects of a hurricane, or reflecting on getting older and being a responsible parent. Everything in Dave's life is "grist for his comedy mill," but the writers opted this season to up the wacky quotient, as in "The Joint Venture," in which Dave and Beth's investment property literally goes to pot, and "The Country Girl," in which a French exchange student cooks the family rabbit. The Barry TV family was that prime time rarity, a happily, albeit at times chaotically, functional nuclear family. David and Beth's stable married life is in comic contrast to the messy personal lives of their single best friends, the "impossibly stupid" shallow aging playboy, Ken (Shadoe Stevens) and pathetic divorcee Shel (Meshach Taylor). More welcome company is J.C. Wendel as charming screwball Mia, who quits the newspaper to become Dave's assistant. Memorable guest stars include Mel Torme as God in "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," Florence Henderson, Audrey Meadows and Stella Stevens in the poignant Mother's Day episode, "The Mommies," and John Ritter as a fun-loving former college friend in "The Accidental Tourists." Patrick Warburton joined the ensemble in a recurring role as Eric, a handyman who becomes Mia's new boyfriend. There is a special place in TV heaven for unassuming shows like Dave's World that fly comfortably under the radar during their modest runs, never generating any buzz, earning critics' plaudits, or taking home awards. This is the opposite of edge, and what the show lacks in snark, it more than makes up for in viewer goodwill. --Donald Liebenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Season Two Even Better Than Season One, November 25, 2008

In season two Dave's World became an even funnier show than in season one. The characters continued to develop and there was one noticeable change in Mia quitting her job at the newspaper, where she worked for Kenny, and becoming Dave's personal assistant. This increased her role in the show and allowed for Patrick Warburton to enter at first a guest and later a regular as her boyfriend. This move increased the humor and overall quality of the show.

Beth, played by Delane Matthews, was a wonderful, funny, caring, yet strong and long suffering character. A husband like Dave, in real life and at least in certain circumstances, could have been difficult to live with. Yet she was very patient with him many times. She was definitely part of season's one success and I should have given her some credit in my review of season one, which I regret now I didn't. Dave, Shel, and Kenny all continued to develop in season two which overall only made the show that much better.

I have all, or at least most, of season two taped from its original run. They still play, but I wonder for how much longer. I have watched them many times over the years and Dave's World continues to be a show I can watch over and over and still laugh. Even when I know what line is coming. I believe that's a tribute to the quality of the writing and the acting ability of the cast.

I will certainly buy season two when it's released. I very much want to be able to preserve this show in the long run. Even if season two, as season one clearly did, omits certain or even all closing scenes, the bulk of the show itself will be enough to make the DVD set worthwhile. The closing scenes I mentioned in my season one review that were missing there didn't affect the overall story line and though some did contain some humorous moments the overall episodes were not really affected. Whether they will be contained in season two or not obviously remains to be seen. But even if not and even if I could know ahead of time they wouldn't be, I would still buy this set. I hope many others will to so seasons three and four can also be released.

Update Feb. 14, 2009.

Having now received and viewed my set it seems all but one episode has the closing scenes included. Unless I missed something, the episode known as "A Room With a View", where Tommy discovers he can see in the neighbor's bedroom window from his new treehouse, does not have the closing scene. All others do. In that particular episode, the closing scene included the neighbors looking back at the Barry's. The couple was portrayed by John Ritter and Markie Post, who at the time were starring together in Hearts Afire. Maybe for some copyright reason that scene couldn't be included. But all others are so that clearly doesn't have to be an issue for anyone thinking of purchasing this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave Barry Rocks, September 14, 2009
Our family loved this series when it first aired, so I was thrilled to find out that the first two seasons were available on DVD. Loosely based on the real Dave Barry, the show is full of wonderful, understated humor and overstated hijinks. Harry Anderson is perfect as Dave Barry, Shadoe Stevens is an appropriatley vain Kenny, and Meshach Taylor was excellent in the role of Dr. Sheldon Baylor. Delane Matthews had great comedic chemistry with Anderson in her role as Beth Barry. In spite of the fact that the original opening song could not be used on the DVD series, the episodes are still as enjoyable as they were back in the day, and what a trip down memory lane to the early-mid 1990s. Anyone who was a fan of the series will not be disappointed in this DVD.
