5.0 out of 5 stars David Allan Coe Live "Captures" the True Outlaw, September 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: David Allan Coe Live: If That Ain't Country (Audio CD)
David Allan Coe Live gives true country fans a good dose of gritty, believable country music. This album was recorded live at Billy Bob's Texas Night Club and showcases David's greatest hits along with five brand new songs. Warren Haynes, formerly of the Allman Brothers and currently of Government Mule, plays a mean slide guitar and co-produces this soon to be legendary album. The CD takes you on a rockin' ride through David's hits like "If That Ain't Country", "The Ride", and the perfect country and western song..."You Never Even Called Me By My Name". David Allan throws in some gems he's written for other artists too including the Johnny Paycheck classic "Take This Job and Shove It" and Tanya Tucker's "Would you Lay With Me In a Field of Stone".

David Allan Coe also shows that he isn't ready to give up on new music either. "Soul Shine" written by Warren Haynes, packs an emotional punch and "Talkin' to the Blues" starts the album off in fine order. The new song that really stands out though is "There's No Holes In These Hands". Here David Allan and co-writers David Wade and Gary Edwards collaborate to give us a true country song that gives the listeners something to think about. "There's No Holes In These Hands" tells the story of a man who's life parallels the live of Jesus, but by no means is perfect. It's classic Coe, but gives the rest of us men (and our women) some things to think about. Check it out, a tattooed, longhaired, biker who isn't afraid to sing about Jesus and Mama. Maybe there's hope for country music after all! Rock on David Allan... You Da Man!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great, December 11, 1999
This review is from: David Allan Coe Live: If That Ain't Country (Audio CD)
This is an enjoyable set of country-rock featuring former Allman Brother Warren Haynes on a couple of tracks. Besides Coe's most famous tunes (Take This Job & Shove It" & "You Never Even Called Me By My Name"), the highlight is the uptempo "Desperate Man", punctuated by some lively Clapton-esque guitar, and the classic drinking-song-singalong-style "Jack Daniels." Although the only real clunker is the (thankfully) brief a capella version of "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)", most of the tunes are slow to mid-tempo. The band never really rocks out until the closing "Son of the South." If you're looking for outlaw country with some more bite to it, check out Shaver's "Unshaven:Live" CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars If this CD ain't great, I'll kiss your..., November 9, 2009
This review is from: David Allan Coe Live: If That Ain't Country (Audio CD)
If you're a fan of DAC, country, rock, southern rock, blues or just damn good live albums, buy this CD. If you're not a fan of any of those, then I honestly don't know why you're reading this.

This is a great DAC live album, if there is a weak spot, it's "There's no holes in these hands" which I'd bet a lot of people like.

Warren Haynes (who played with DAC for years) of Allman Bros. & Gov't Mule fame plays on this CD, and he really shines on his own song, Soulshine and on the scorching version of Son of the South--these 2 songs alone are worth the price, but there are 13 more. This is really a great live album, buy it.
