In this collection of 120 portraits, his first monograph in 10 years, David Armstrong is not presenting a battalion of waifs, or claque-dents, or rent boys. Why, even Callum Wilson makes an appearance.
Rather, Mr Armstrong has collected an interesting and sympathetic crew of good looking, or, if not always good looking, then certainly intriguing young men - and they are very well photographed - although perhaps a disproportionate number of them are enveloped in creamy white sheets! But the accent throughout is on tasteful studies.
The book is a fine production by Damiani of Italy - well printed on heavy stock - with an introduction by Manuel Segade and a reminiscence by Boyd Holbrook (to whom the book is dedicated)who appears to know Mr Armstrong all too well !
There is also an index to the photos, with the name of the subject and the year in which the photo was taken.
A conversation with Ryan McGinley rounds out this very worthwhile production.
This is not a collection to which you'll return often, I suspect, but it is one to be re-visited and enjoyed from time to time. It strikes me as the best of the current crop of books of photographs of young men. There is no hint of exploitation or objectification here - but only of a photographer in love with his subjects.

A surprising and enriching collection of portraits of young men captured through the artistic and tasteful camera of David Armstrong. At first I didn't think I would take to this book but the quality of Armstrong's work with his models really wins you over. This is not your Corbin Fisher or Mark Henderson or even Howard Roffman book of photos of young men, so don't expect to find an array of muscular bodies or full nudity or dicks on display or boys with boys. Armstrong's models are just your average guys around town decked out in some beautifully framed portraits, some even dressed in feminine outfits and donning some unusual head gear but all very fetching and also very male. An engrossing selection of young men with unusual qualities and enough variety in type to seduce the reader in this finely produced art book. Really enjoyed the witty comments by Armstrong and his muse Boyd Holbrook (who figures in some of the photos) to each other in the introduction. There is also a nice conversation piece at the end between Armstrong and Ryan McGinley.
