From the Author

Just the essentials for your T4i

When a command card doesn't provide enough information, and a small camera guide has too much padding, pull this Compact Field Guide digest out of your camera bag and get the advice and recommendations you need quickly.

I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing, but readers who have been using my 400-page in-depth guides (individually tailored for each camera) to master their cameras have asked me to distill the most essential information into a portable field guide for on-the-go reference. In the approximately 150 pages of this lay-flat, spiral-bound book, you'll find in-depth descriptions of every control, menu option, and capability of your camera.  Each choice is accompanied by my recommendations and a description of when you should or should not use a particular setting.  There are seven no-nonsense chapters:
  1. Quick Setup Guide.  You -- or someone you loan your camera to -- can set up the key exposure, autofocus, and other settings in minutes with the step-by-step instructions in this chapter.
  2. Streetsmart Roadmap. Can't recall what a particular button or dial does, or don't remember how to access bracketing or another feature you seldom use?  This chapter has photos of every control and a description of how to use it.
  3. Menu Settings (Part 1). Command cards and cheat sheets provide a menu listing and a recap of each of the menu  options.  This chapter explains how to use them, too.
  4. Menu Settings (Part 2.) Learn how to use the set-up options for your camera to configure it to operate the way you want.
  5. Using Flash. Reference guide to working with internal flash, and external units.
  6. Shooting Movies. I've managed to squeeze in instructions on using the camera's advanced movie-making capabilities, along with tips on shooting better movies in the field.
  7. Shooting Tips. Pages and pages of tables listing settings recommendations for a variety of situations, such as stage performances, long exposures, landscapes, and portraits.
I know many T4i owners are buying both my "big book" for their particular camera and this Compact Field Guide, which summarizes the operations of both, so they're equipped with the information they need whether at home or on-the-go. Sit down with me, and we can explore these great cameras together.  It's an exhilarating ride!

More About the Author

With nearly 1.5 million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling author of camera-specific guidebooks, and the originator of popular series like David Busch's Pro Secrets, David Busch's Compact Field Guides, David Busch's Guides to Digital SLR Photography, and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides.

Most of his hugely successful books for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Panasonic digital cameras are the top-selling guidebooks for their respective camera models. His advice has been featured on NPR's "All Tech Considered."

Busch's dozens of other books devoted to digital photography include David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets and Mastering Digital SLR Photography. As a roving photojournalist for more than 20 years, he has illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Busch has operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photographs and articles have been published in magazines as diverse as PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He's also reviewed digital cameras for CNet Networks and Computer Shopper.

As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten magazines, he has more than 130 books and 2500 articles to his credit. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company's photography divisions for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography & Imaging, PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising.

The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles. In addition to Kodak, CCS photography clients included Hewlett-Packard. He sold his interest in CCS in 1992 to become a full-time author, photographer, and reporter.

Since then, Busch has become one of the leading photojournalist/authors in the United States. He has had as many as five books appear simultaneously in the Amazon.com Top 25 Digital Photography Books, and when Michael Carr of About.com named the top five digital photography books for beginners, the #1 and #2 choices were his Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. Several of his digital imaging books have sold in excess of 50,000 copies.

Busch was a featured guest speaking on digital photography on Toronto's Breakfast Television show in 2005, was the keynote speaker at the Dayton Computerfest, and has been a call-in guest for 22 different radio shows nationally and in major markets, including WTOP-AM (Washington), KYW-AM (Philadelphia), USA Network (Daybreak USA), WPHM-AM (Detroit), KMJE-FM (Sacramento), CJAD-AM (Montreal), WBIX-AM (Boston), ABC Radio Network (Jonathan & Mary Show).

His work has been translated into Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Bulgarian, German, Italian, French, and other languages. his web site is http://www.dbusch.com.

This guide goes with me wherever I take my camera. I have referred to it many times when I find myself in a situation where I cannot seem to find the correct lighting or if I have a problem getting a good shot due to problem I did not expect. It is easy to find the answers and solutions. Good reference.

This is a great field guide, handy and sturdy for use in the field. I would have like a bit more on "creative" ways to use the camera, but still it covers all of the tools and the basics on how to use them.

Good reference source for owners of the Cannon EOS Rebel T4I/6500. Was expecting a thicker book with more details on optimizing photography with this camera.

I carry this book in my camera bag. While not new to photography, I AM to digital and the manual that came with the camera makes the assumption that you are NOT new to the format. This makes shortcuts of what you are trying to accomplish very easy!

I will, however, recommend that you by this guide and the "From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Jeff Revell. Read Jeff's book first and that will plant you feet on the paths you wish to explore. Use David's guide to drive you to the options that will get you the results you are looking for.
