From the Author

Although they share some features, the new Nikon V1 mirrorless camera is very different from its cousin, the Nikon J1.  That's why I decided it was important to write this book, dedicated exclusively to the more advanced V1 model, rather than try to lump the two into a single book.  The Nikon V1 has a high resolution electronic viewfinder that the J1 lacks, an LCD with twice the resolution, both an electronic and mechanical shutter, an accessory shoe for add-ons like a tiltable flash and a GPS unit, and the ability to use an external microphone for even better movies.  Clearly, the V1 is an enthusiast's camera.

But what if you're not an enthusiast -- but hope to become one, or simply want to take better pictures?  In that case, you really need this book written specifically for your camera to show exactly how to use every feature and option of the V1.  If you're in love with photography, but so far haven't been in love with learning to use cameras, let me help you get the most from your V1.

My Nikon V1 Guide to Digital Movie Making and Still Photography is divided into four parts.   Part I, "Getting Started with your Nikon V1" includes three chapters that will help you set up your camera, start shooting great pictures and movies in minutes, and explain every control, button, and dial, and how to use them.

Part II, "Beyond the Basics," has four chapters that show you how to use the V1's amazing Motion Snapshot and Smart Photo Selector modes, and the best settings to use for the Still Image and Movie modes -- including how to shoot incredible slow motion movies at 400 and 1200 frames per second.  Other chapters explain how to fine tune exposure, and use the V1's lightning-fast autofocus to get sharp images every time.  An additional chapter zeroes in on movie-making techniques and tips.

In Part III, "Advanced Tools"  I guide you through every menu option and offer advice on what each does -- or does not do -- and when you should, or should not, use a particular setting.  Rather than re-hash the Nikon menu, I provide a wealth of useful tips.  There's a full chapter on using lenses, with an analysis and review of every lens available for the V1, and another chapter on working with available light and flash.

Read Part IV, "Enhancing Your Experience," to pick up tips you'll find nowhere else on using accessories like iPads/tablets, iOS/Android smart phones, using GPS, and working with WiFi to share your images.  There are also introductions to available software, and some trouble-shooting/preventive tips.

Whether you're a dSLR owner who has picked up the Nikon V1 as a compact or backup camera, a would-be enthusiast who wants to learn all of the camera's great features, or a beginner who wants to learn the basics of photography while mastering the Nikon V1, sit down with me and we'll explore this camera together.  You're in for a great ride!

UPDATE:  Neither the AS-N1000 accessory shoe adapter nor FT-1 lens adapter were available when I wrote this book.  You should know that the shoe adapter does not allow use as a hot shoe for external flashes such as the SB-400 (despite what is stated in the book), and that the FT-1 requires a camera firmware update to operate.  The firmware update also adds pixel mapping to the Setup menu. This information came to light after the book had gone to press.

More About the Author

With more than 2 million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling author of camera-specific guidebooks, and the originator of popular series like David Busch's Pro Secrets, David Busch's Compact Field Guides, David Busch's Guides to Digital SLR Photography, and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides.

Most of his hugely successful books for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Panasonic digital cameras are the top-selling guidebooks for their respective camera models. His advice has been featured on NPR's "All Tech Considered."

Busch's dozens of other books devoted to digital photography include David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets and Mastering Digital SLR Photography. As a roving photojournalist for more than 20 years, he has illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Busch has operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photographs and articles have been published in magazines as diverse as PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He's also reviewed digital cameras for CNet Networks and Computer Shopper.

As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten magazines, he has more than 130 books and 2500 articles to his credit. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company's photography divisions for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography & Imaging, PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising.

The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles. In addition to Kodak, CCS photography clients included Hewlett-Packard. He sold his interest in CCS in 1992 to become a full-time author, photographer, and reporter.

Since then, Busch has become one of the leading photojournalist/authors in the United States. He has had as many as five books appear simultaneously in the Amazon.com Top 25 Digital Photography Books, and when Michael Carr of About.com named the top five digital photography books for beginners, the #1 and #2 choices were his Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. Several of his digital imaging books have sold in excess of 50,000 copies.

Busch was a featured guest speaking on digital photography on Toronto's Breakfast Television show in 2005, was the keynote speaker at the Dayton Computerfest, and has been a call-in guest for 22 different radio shows nationally and in major markets, including WTOP-AM (Washington), KYW-AM (Philadelphia), USA Network (Daybreak USA), WPHM-AM (Detroit), KMJE-FM (Sacramento), CJAD-AM (Montreal), WBIX-AM (Boston), ABC Radio Network (Jonathan & Mary Show).

A great help for all V1 owners. I graduated from a point and shoot and this book not only contained everything I wanted to know about my V1 (some of which is not in the Nikon owners manual and some dealers don't even know) but contains basics of photography which I really needed as I am fast becoming a hobbyist. Highly recommended!

This guide is a wonderful book for the point and shoot users coming to the
V1. The scope is broad enough to include specific camera info with more
general photographic information available as well. That should make it very attractive for that segment of the photographic community.

I picked up a V1 when the prices fell like a rock, late in 2012. And the V1 is a VERY capable picture taking machine. However, to get the most out of it, you need to spend a bit more time understanding the menus and options than with most entry level DSLRs. This book is an EXCELLENT way to find out "how" to do the things that you normally do "differently" on a DSLR (with lots of "buttons"). Well organized, and well written; allows you to get the most out of the V1. Most of the bad press on this camera was undeserved; this book helps you to unlock the capability that Nikon designed into the camera!

This is a well written book that provides the knowledge to utilize the full range of features built into the NikonV1. It explains how to go from a point-and-shoot perspective to the high end photographer without the techno-babble many other photography books employ. The author explains in plain English the camera from the basics of what each button does to how to use it to produce good photographs without any assumption you have a significant knowledge of photography. This book is ideal for the photographer that wants to use the capabilities the Nikon V1 provides without spending a lifetime doing so.

Would have given this 5 stars if it had read itself to me! It is a great book and contains much more information than I could ever have derived from the manufacturers operating instructions. It had been years since I used a 35mm film camera and then only was lucky when I would get a great photo. In the years that passed I moved to various digital cameras but never "mastered" their use to optimize the cameras full capabilities. With the new Nikon V1 it is a somewhat revolutionary camera with lots of features to make "snapping" a good photo almost effortless. The camera also has features that when used properly will allow for very sophisticated professional results. That is where this book really shines, and it is written in such a way to be easily understood, (and mixes a bit of humor occassionally). I also bought the David Busch Field Guide for this camera but have not referred to it yet as I am still learning from this "bigger" book. It seemed somewhat expensive when I bought it, but after reading it and applying the ideas and techniques consider it a great purchase. Add the great example photos that have been published in the book and it begins to look like a bargain. Would not consider buying a new camera today without buying it's David Busch companion. Buy it and get the most out of your camera with the leaat pain and delay.

Book has valuable information on the functions of the camera outside the manufacturer's book of instruction. For example it explains the mechanical shutter vs the electronic shutter.
