More About the Author

With more than 2 million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling author of camera-specific guidebooks, and the originator of popular series like David Busch's Pro Secrets, David Busch's Compact Field Guides, David Busch's Guides to Digital SLR Photography, and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides.

Most of his hugely successful books for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Panasonic digital cameras are the top-selling guidebooks for their respective camera models. His advice has been featured on NPR's "All Tech Considered."

Busch's dozens of other books devoted to digital photography include David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets and Mastering Digital SLR Photography. As a roving photojournalist for more than 20 years, he has illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Busch has operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photographs and articles have been published in magazines as diverse as PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He's also reviewed digital cameras for CNet Networks and Computer Shopper.

As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten magazines, he has more than 130 books and 2500 articles to his credit. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company's photography divisions for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography & Imaging, PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising.

The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles. Having struggled to wrap my head around Nikon's instruction manual (with little success), this book was quite a relief. Well written and illustrated, Busch presents the D3 series with clarity and in a sequence that is logical and easy to understand.
I purchased the Kindle edition for the iPad- it looks beautiful in full color and is easy to navigate.

True, David Busch is deservedly among the best authors of how-to books for cameras. His reputation is sterling and he deserves his success.

The book in this matter takes on two cameras at the same time, the Nikon D3s and Nikon D3x. I hope that is seen as too much work in the writing and far too much in confusing reading.

The two subject cameras have much in common but the problem is there are enormous differences that get in the way of an easy understanding of advice needed, in my case, solely for the D3x.

My camera, an $8,000 expense that is viewed by many as over-priced. In my case, price is secondary because it precisely fills the specifications that I need for a highly specific assignment, shooting some 25 formal Japanese gardens throughout the United States. My Master Gardener wife will be the director of a venture that will put us on three Amtrac rail lines. We will de-train at 15 stops where we will visit from one to five gardens and then re-board after however many days were required. The garden subject deserves the finest grain resolution possible. These gardens are subtle and the viewer of our efforts deserves very clear representations to display the differences. That requires Nikon's D3x with its 24.5 megapixel sensor and the many valuable functions such as automated in-camera HDR processing of three or more bracketed images. There is more. Unlike the D3s, there is no D3x video -- a problem solved with a new Fujifilm HS20 EXR with 1080P video and an automatic HDR in-camera capability.

If you can sense in these sketchy examples that the Busch book is dealing with a very sophisticated D3x and, after all is said and done, a less demanding D3s in the same book.

The book is comprehensive, language is simple and to the point: excellent tool to understand a very sophisticated state of the art camera: NIkon D3x. Would recommend to photographers wanting to upgrade their understanding of new features.

David is a great author and Nikon authority! Everything is clearly explained and when/why/how would you use certain features. He goes over setting recommendations which you (like myself) don't agree with but then again these are "his" suggestions. I wish there was a KINDLE version as this book is LARGE/HEAVY to lug around with you!

I have owned several Nikon bodies and have read many of David's books. Though this book is written for both the D3s and D3x he clarifies the differences in each body when applicable to one or the other.

There aren't too many books for the D3s (one other I believe) but this book will definitely help you in setting up your camera for your particular shooting style.

I bought this book used from Amazon because I had very good luck with a previous used book purchase. I don't know if I'm just lucky or what, but again, the book I received is what I would call 'new'! It's firm, no bent pages and extremely clean. I have seen new books at Barnes and Noble that looked worse. And, I was expecting a longer wait because of free shipping. Not so, had it with 5 days. My only stupid mistake was I thought I bought the Nikon D3 edition, which is what I needed, but the Nikon D3s is mostly the same camera. The critical parts I need to refer to are the same for both camera's. Very pleased, will buy from Amazon again.

This guide is perfect for the D3s user. In fact, Busch discusses capabilities that are common to many Nikon models but I never realized it! But, then Busch goes on to specifically discuss the D3s are how to more fully utilize its capabilities. Very thorough. I read through the entire book, and now keep it as a reference tool. I don't have any other books on the D3s to compare this to, but I have compared Dave Busch's book on the D700 to others, which is a big reason I bought it for the D3s. His writings are clear and easy to comprehend. I am an amateur photographer and this has been perfect for me.

This has turned out to be a very helpful guide for me. I've been using DSLRs for about 18 months and recently upgraded from a D90 to the D3x as I'm making my attempt at professional photography. David's book has been very helpful in this regards. However, I purchased the Kindle version, and therefore find the illustrations limited by the technology. I'm sure the color book version would be even more beneficial to me. However, the advantage of the Kindle is that it is much easier for me to take this into the field to be used as a reference manual even after I have read through it.

David Busch's "Nikon D3s/D3X Guide to Digital SLR Photography" is spot on! He explains in easy to understand language, (compared to the manual), each and every aspect on the camera. I own the D3S and I had it set up by the time I finished the book. Reading the manual, which I did, would of taken many more days to complete. David gives you his opinion on settings, but leaves the options open for you to make decisions on. He also includes chapterts on exposure and lighting which are very valuable. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling to set up their camera.
