From the Author

Although the NEX-5N shares many features with the earlier NEX-5/NEX-3 models, as well as with the flagship NEX-7 camera, I decided it was important to update this book exclusively for the NEX-5N.  Clearly, this camera is an enthusiast model, and deserves a book written for both beginners and more advanced photographers.

But what if you're not an enthusiast -- but hope to become one, or simply want to take better pictures?  In that case, you really need this book to show exactly how to use every feature and option of the NEX-5N.  If you're in love with photography, but so far haven't been in love with learning to use cameras, let me help you get the most from your NEX-5N.

My Sony NEX-5N Guide to Digital Photography is divided into four parts.   Part I, "Getting Started with your Sony Alpha NEX-5N" includes chapters that will help you set up your camera, start shooting great pictures and movies in minutes, and explain each control, button, and dial, and how to use them. I guide you through every menu option and offer advice on what each does -- or does not do -- and when you should, or should not, use a particular setting.  Rather than simply re-hash the Sony manual, I provide a wealth of useful tips.

Part II, "Beyond the Basics," has chapters that show you how to use the NEX-5N's amazing exposure modes, including Sweep Panorama and 3D Sweep Panorama. There's an entire section on using the camera's autofocus to get sharp images every time.

In Part III, "Advanced Tools"  The NEX-5N's movie-making capabilities take you to the next level, and I've written a full chapter on the camera's video features, with plenty of shooting tips for those new to movie shooting.  Another chapter shows you how to choose and use lenses, with an analysis and review of the most important lenses available for the NEX-5N, and there's a chapter on working with available light and flash.

Read Part IV, "Enhancing Your Experience," to pick up tips for choosing software for  your NEX-5N, and a chapter on troubleshooting and maintaining your camera.  The software advice is strictly an overview; I don't pad this book out with Photoshop how-to lessons that show you how to correct mistakes you made while shooting. This entire book is dedicated to helping you get the shot you want in the camera.

Whether you're a dSLR owner who is switching to the Sony Alpha NEX-5N, a would-be enthusiast who wants to learn all of the camera's great features, or a beginner who wants to learn the basics of photography while mastering the camera, sit down with me and we'll explore this camera together.  You're in for a great ride!

And, as always, I include contact information in the introduction of the book, so you can ask questions about your camera, send suggestions for improvements, and for corrections for the web site's Errata page and fixing in later printings.

I bought this book a couple days after i bought the Nex5, I knew absolutely nothing about photography. I bought the Nex camera because I wanted to take cool photos but I had never messed with settings on a point and shoot and didn't know what anything was on the NEX5, the owners manual and the on screen menus gave a little info but still needed to know what things are and what they did. This book not only gave me a thorough understanding of the camera, but it gave me an understanding on photography and techniques. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to know how to use the Sony Nex cameras and learn about how to take great picures with it.

David Busch's "Sony Alpha NEX-5N Guide to Digital Photography" appears (understandably) to be a rehash of his earlier guide on the NEX-5. Unfortunately, though, he has not updated all relevant sections of the book. For example, on page 71 he omits ISO 100 from the list of ISO options. ISO 100 is not an option in NEX-5 but is in the NEX-5N. Again on page 129 he says "The Sony Alpha NEX can use ISO settings from ISO 200 all the way up to the impressive maximum of 12800." This may be the case with the NEX-5, but the NEX-5N also includes ISO 100 and ISO 25600. In fact there is a photo (Figure 4-16) on page 128 that shows ISO 100 on a LCD Live View display!

In the chapter on movie making, he refers on page 181, to an upgrade to firmware version 03 that provides the ability to maintain a fixed aperture. I spent some time searching for this upgrade on the internet only to find it was applicable to the NEX-5 and not the NEX-5N which comes, I've now found, with this feature without needing an upgrade.

On page 243, Busch provides advice on finding firmware updates for the NEX-5 model.

Really!! How could he have been so sloppy with this book?

I am not advocating NOT buying this book because there are few (no?) other books available currently for people wanting more information and hand-holding than the NEX-5N camera manuals provide. However, read it with your NEX-5N camera on hand so you can check the things he says to find out if they are correct.

Busch fills out the information that's in Sony's printed and (longer) PDF manuals. There's not much in his Guide that isn't already there. What he adds are practical tips and discussions and comparisons of the very many features of the camera. The NEX-5N has an immense collection of features, superbly implemented and more than a bit overwhelming. The camera's UI is probably as simple and efficient as it can be, but even the 300 pages of Sony manuals need further enhancement. This is what Busch's Guide provides.

Most useful for me are discussions of how the various features compare and interact, along with suggestions for when to use them. For example, the camera has many ways of dealing with a low-light scene. These include using the flash, setting a very high ISO, hand held six-shot combined image, various shutter, aperture, manual and programmed modes, and tripod mounted slow shutter exposure. His discussions of these explain the pros and cons and suggests when one would be more suitable than others.

Nonetheless I would still have liked more tips and suggestions for uses of the NEX-5N's many features. I thought he spent too much paper and ink on a recap of what's in the manuals. He's an experienced photographer and should really be able to give more specific and detailed suggestions of how to exploit the camera's capability. In the first four months I shot over 10,000 jpgs (it's free!) in different places and conditions and learned a lot by trial and error. What I learned was that the camera could get a good to excellent photo in any lighting situation if set properly. If my eyes could see it the NEX-5X could get a marvelously good image.

This Guide is a much better read than Sony's already very adequate manuals.

My NEX-5n is my first step up from a point and shoot. So I had NO experience with a DSLR and I struggled with the very terse Sony manual. I ordered David Busch's book and devoured it in 2 days. I got a jump start from this book that it would have taken a year to learn by trial and error.
It's well organized and written in clear conversational language. He gives you enough 'under the hood' detail on how things work for clear understanding (how the auto focus works for example) without head banging technical stuff. He has some tips on improving your photographs (use of lighting is one) but it's mostly about using all the features of the camera and that's exactly what I needed to supplement the comes with documentation.
Even better, I had trouble understanding something and sent Busch a question by email. Two days later, he replied with an additional explanation. Impressive!
I recommend this book highly. It's the missing manual and is a great value.

Once again, author David D. Busch has produced the authoritative guide to the latest SONY NEX-series camera. He's updated his best-selling NEX-5 book with coverage of the NEX-5N's revamped menus, additional features, and new material that will help any NEX-5N owner get the most from their cameras. We like the friendly, non-threatening approach, and in-depth analysis of each feature and option, with plenty of guidance on using particular features. Busch not only tells you what every control and menu option does, but why you'd want to select a particular feature. There are 10 thick chapters, each going far beyond what you'll find in the skimpy manual provided with the camera.

Chapter 1: Getting Started. Helps you with setup, choosing shooting, metering, and focusing modes, so you can hit the ground running. There's a brief introduction to movie-making, too. All these quick start topics are explored in more detail later in the book.
Chapter 2: NEX-5N Roadmap. Looks at every control, dial, and button, and explains exactly how to use each of them.
Chapter 3: Setup. The author goes through every menu item and option and explains when and why to use each.
Chapter 4: Getting the Right Exposure. An interesting guide to the NEX-5N's exposure options, histograms, and other tools.
Chapter 5: Advanced Shooting. Here you'll learn about advanced photographic techniques possible with the NEX-5N
Chapter 6: Movie-Making. More than a video features guide, this chapter offers suggestions on how to shoot better movies.
Chapter 7: Working with Lenses. The author looks at broad classes of lenses and has recommendations for the best lenses in the Sony E-mount lineup.
Chapter 8: Making Light Work for You.
