Love,
By A Customer
This review is from: David Carson 2ndsight (Paperback)
I've heard you either love or hate much of the work Carson does. I've also heard you can learn to love. My recommendation to all young designers out there: learn to love David Carson. This is an inspirational book on intuition, and injecting a little part of yourself into everything you do. It also talks about the single design solution myth, and the other end of the design spectrum: arbitrary or meaningless creations.

If you liked his first book you are sure to love this one. Carson clearly maintains his position as the most cutting-edge designer today.

This is up to date brain food. One of the few books that gets graphic design as it is today. Yes, you have to have the intuition to understand the book, here he instructs you on how to use it. Wish there were more books like this.

If you like David Carson's design aesthetic, you'll like this book. The book doesn't have much written content on graphic design technique and skill. According to Carson, it's just about intuition -- you either have it or you don't.

This book is another great Carson must have. It shows young designers how to use more freedom of expression. A must for anyone in the design world.

David Carson: radical chic selling cool corporate culture,

This review is from: David Carson 2ndsight: Grafik Design after the End of Print (Paperback)
The impact of David Carson's work is enormous--the unfocused and collaged text that is now ubiquitous in graphic design finds its origins in his work. This book, while giving good examples of his ads for such diverse clients as Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, the magazine RAYGUN, to surfer magazines, reflects what is problematic of David Carson's work as a whole: it lacks focus and clarity--but maybe that's his point and, also, the point of this mid-career survey by Mr. Blackwell. Nevertheless, this is a book I recommend for anyone interested in the way Carson's bold graphics redefined the look of advertisements in the 90's. It is visually quite arresting, but equally quite disturbing in that it shows how a creative sensibility is easily coopted by corporations to reinvigorate their own identities.

This book is artistic inspiration in every sense of the word. The graphical lay out of the book is exceptional and was the basses of multiple pieces of coursework for myself. I love his use of quotations and expression through graphical design. He is a true legend and I will continue to buy his books for may years to come.

Not as good as the other,

This review is from: David Carson 2ndsight: Grafik Design after the End of Print (Paperback)
Carson is one of the most important designers of the decade; he really gave a new direction to what we know as design. His style to work with fonts and their legibility is something that was not used before, may others design didn't have courage. The end of Print, the first Carson's book was a break through for design today. It's a shame this one, Carson Second Sight, doesn't have the same impact as the other. Just half of the book shows Carson's work (that's the best part), the other half shows Carson's students work some are good but they don't have the same quality. The texts in the book are boring, and don't give much information. Probably Carson could have waited a little more to release a new book. But if you are a Carson's fan (like myself), or have a lot of money to spend (that's not my case) is a good thing to have this book.
