David Crockett His Life and Adventures,
This review is from: David Crockett His Life and Adventures (Kindle Edition)
This is a good read. The author does not editorialize and allows the reader to see many of Crockett's own accounts of his life from his own personal journals.

This review is from: David Crockett His Life and Adventures (Kindle Edition)
I grew up a fan of Walt Disney's Davy Crocket movies and I read Davy Crockett: His Own Story in college to compare the history with the legend. I would have stopped at the autobio if it weren't for Kindle offering all of these older and harder to find titles. It's a straightforward telling of Davy's life story and I think more of an inspiration to the Disney film that Crockett's own work. And that surprised me in a pleasant way. Written in the late 1800s, this book deals with Davy the legend after the fire of his time but before the era of revisionist authors that look for every wart. It's one of the best books I have read about the harshness of life 200 years ago and how people took it for granted that peril was beyond every horizon.

If you like reading about the pioneer life this is a great intro to it. It has its moments of fun and then serious. I had some trouble putting this book down. Hope you do too.

This review is from: Davy Crockett: His Life and Adventures (Paperback)
This true account of David Crockett and his life is fascinating. The legend pales in comparisson to the true story. Here is a man who lived joyously in the most humble conditions. Crockett lived in a time when a man who could hunt could eat. He may also farm, but that was not as interesting to Crockett as hunting. And yes, he did fight and kill bear, many of them. The book is filled with many excerpts from Crockett's own journal which provides the full flavor of the man's vernacular and heart. The book reads like a J. F. Cooper 'Leatherstocking Western' but it is more heroic and it is true. Please read this book about a man who was born humble, lived honestly and died bravely. This book begins with the passage of Crockett's grandparents to the new world; but does not dwell there. It moves quickly to Crockett's formative years and to his glory years. The man accomplished much and so the book is many pages. It ends with Crockett's brave stand at Alamo. The author endeavors to lay out the facts and to allow the reader to ascribe values. It is hard to fathom that such a man existed as David Crockett. And it is a pleasure to know that no fiction could live up to the truth. Also, it was FREE on Amazon Kindle......can't beat that ! However, this book would be well worth $12.99 and not a penny would be wasted. |
