5.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Re-Issue, June 8, 2008
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
I'm very happy that David Johansen's first album has been re-issued, but I'm disappointed that it's missing the bonus track of 'The Rope Song" which appeared on the old Razor and Tie edition. It's a great song and I'm a bit puzzled why it wasn't included as American Beat put a bonus track on each of their releases of "In Style" and "Here Comes the Night". Still, it's great to have this out again and I hope that people will support these re-releases of great older catalog titles. I just hope that they will included bonus tracks to make this appealing to people who own the old releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars 25 years??, February 3, 2003

I was going through an old box last night when I found a cassette with David Johansen wriiten on it. Geez, I have heard this in a long time. so, I popped it in and was totally amazed. Twenty five years ago ths month DJ recorded what was or shoud have been the road map rock bands of the 80's. It's music that has aged beautifully. The lyrics are clever, the guitars are powerful and of course David 's vocals are so raw and passionate.
I woke up this morning singing "Girls".

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Back David Jo, All Is Forgiven!, June 6, 2001
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
I still pray for the day when David Johansen abandons all of this Buster Pondexter nonsense and returns to the glory and brilliance exhibited on this, his first solo album, but from what I've read recently, I shouldn't hold my breath. The music he created here is quite a departure from his days of debauchery with The New York Dolls, but it rocks nonetheless. Most of the material has a one-take sort of feel, from the snappy "Funky But Chic" to the straight ahead rock of "Cool Metro" and "Lonely Tenement," to the tender "Donna." The centerpiece and real gem here, however, is the breathtaking "Frenchette," which begins with Johansen only accompanied by a piano before breaking down into a full fledged, guitar-driven celebration of life. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's just dance! Move over, Mick!, April 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
David Jo rocks! This rates among my top ten favorites of all time! The guitar work (check out "Donna") is scorchin'. Nothing compares to David's gutsie vaocals...the lyrics are killer, too! I've been listening to these songs for twenty years and they still get me pumped! Play it loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitars playing perfectly and drummer pounding strong, May 23, 2009

This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
David Johansen's solo record has to go down as one of the most overlooked albums in music. Released only a few years after the disintegration of the New York Dolls, Johansen returns with a true masterpiece. Each song sounds unique, but they collectively fit together perfectly bouncing between the self-assured I'm a Lover and Girls to the sorrow of Donna to the world weary and ultimately triumphant Frenchette. As great as the two Dolls albums were, David Johansen still surpasses those albums by being more consistent from start to finish. For all the talk of Johansen and Thunders being the next Jagger/Richards, this album delivers more of a Stones style than anything the Dolls did before or David has accomplished since. Great lyrics, roaring guitars and David's vocals never sounded better. "I can't get the kind of music that I love; that I want; or that I need; so let's just dance."

5.0 out of 5 stars The best rock and roll album to ever come out of N.Y.C.!!!!!, December 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
When I bought this album 20 years ago I played it 'til the grooves wore out. David really puts his heart and soul into every song. It sounds like his heart is being torn out when he sings "Frenchette". Standouts include: "Girls", "Not that much", "Lonely Tenement", and my favorite, "I'm a lover". It's sad that this album wasn't a big commercial success and David had to mutate into the lounge lizard Buster Poindexter. If I had to pick one band to play at a party, it would be the group David assembled for this album..........make that one of two bands........the Ramones would be the other band. Buy this CD now!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never outdated !!!, June 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
David Johansen can be considered a classic. I was born in the same year the New York Dolls released their first LP album, but I like the guys and specially, David. Don't think I'm a 70's music fan, I'm not. But this guy, well he has something to show. This record, his 1st, is a good example of music that can be immortal, with no "expiration date" whatsoever. "Funky but Chic" is a must listen. Trust me, buy, buy, buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where is the bounus track from the Razor & Tie issue, December 9, 2010
This review is from: David Johansen (Audio CD)
I'm a big fan of David Johansen since this album, but where is the bounus track "The Rope Song"from the Razor & Tie issue of this CD? Also why can't American Beat{Which is a cool name for a reissue company} add more bonus tracks on these reissues? Does sound good though, and this is my favorite album by David Jo!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best ever, October 3, 2010

I wanna throw a few more stars onto the pile here. I just re-discovered this via Youtube a couple days ago (found myself watching some NY Dolls vids) and I'm jumping for joy to see it available for download! I've had the record since it came out, but no record player anymore, and the album is one of the most-worn in my collection anyway. This is a masterpiece of ballsy and melodic rock, every song has a special character and attitude. Just listen to the sound samples here and you'll understand.

A MUST HAVE.

And yes, imo, David J left Mick J standing in the shadows :^)
