1.0 out of 5 stars I've seen the movies already, July 18, 2006

This review is from: David Lean and His Films (Paperback)
This book gives a synopsis of all David Lean movies. It is useless unless someone needs to know about movies they have not seen. I wanted to read about behind-the-scenes activities in each of his movies and was chagrined when I looked over this book. I waited too long to return it so all I can do is warn others: buyer beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated, September 20, 2008
By
Rhodes (Hollywood, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: David Lean and His Films (Paperback)
This book certainly has no synopses, just detailed critical analyses of all of Lean's films (it ought to be called the Films of David Lean, as there's not much biography). In fact, if you haven't seen the movie recently, you could miss a lot. These guys are authorities on film noir, but apparently this was their first book. It is certainly worth the effort if you're a Lean fan, because it makes a clear case for Lean as much more than an epic director and reveals a thematic consistency between the films that most clueless or careless reviewers never see. No forest-for-the-trees syndrome here.
