Book Description

February 8, 2006 0708319475 978-0708319475
While the majority of historians view Lloyd George's early career as merely a precursor to his successes at Westminster, this book asserts his status as the first modern Welsh nationalist. Campaigning fearlessly for Home Rule for Wales, official status for the Welsh language, and strong labor legislation, he became a career politician to further argue the cause of the Welsh national movement within Parliament. Also investigated are Lloyd George's Welsh perceptions of the major issues that dominated his time at Westminster (1908–1922) and how Welsh and Celtic values determined his actions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a thoroughly researched and sparky interpretation that reflects the author's long engagement with the life and career of Lloyd George. The book succeeds in locating him in the radical political culture of his youth and expertly evokes the emergence of this key personality in modern politics. It is an excellent starting point for the Celtic Radicals Series." -Dr. Paul O'Leary, Senior Lecturer, Department of History and Welsh History, University of Wales, Aberystwyth (Paul O'Leary )
