5.0 out of 5 stars a treasure, February 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: David Oistrakh Collection, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
A student of the violin myself, I have long felt that David Oistrakh has failed to receive the recognition he deserves. He was one of the greatest violinists of this century (or any other century, in all probability). He was one of those rare musicians who excelled not only in the art of the concerto, but also in that of the sonata, in both cases to the very highest level. And as the recordings on this cd prove, the amazing scope of Oistrakh's talent extends into the realm of chamber music as well. He has an exquisite "chamber music sound," and meshes wonderfully with the other members of the ensembles. The end results are genuinely beautiful interpretations of the works recorded. The added perk of having Shostakovich himself on the piano part of his trio is the final touch--this cd is an absolute treasure. My only complaint about this volume is that the recording quality is not of the highest quality (though it is by no means terrible), but this is of course inevitable in such a case, as the collection is taken from old, low quality recordings. All in all, this volume is a "must" for any classical music enthusiast.
