I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter hesitant at first that she was too old for it. When we got it she fell in love with it. She knew who David was from previous books we've read about him. This book is really well written and has great illustrations to help a young child understand their five senses. After just reading it a few times with her she now opens it up and points to her body parts as she sees them in the picture. For example when they show taste they show a sucker with bugs and trash stuck to it. And she'll say "Ew! Don't eat David". It gives room to discuss things a child should and should not do.

I am such a fan of Shannon's work! GREAT illustrations, simple vocabulary, totally amusing stories that pre-school or primary grade children can really identify with PLUS no matter how outrageous David's behavior each book ends with the assurance that while we might deplore the behavior...we always LOVE the child. Absolutely excellent on all levels!

There is something special about David books. Maybe it is the simplicity of the words but my 1 year old son is absolutely in love with them. He has four of them and always reaches for the David books over any other book that he has. He has tons of them too that have been passed down from siblings. They basically have just a couple of words on each page and you read them in about 20 seconds but the pictures add life to the short story. My son will sit and flip through these books on his own throughout the day. He gets a kick out of these.

When we were fortunate enough to have our first grandson, David, we, of course had to buy him the David books. They have been so much fun. There was a time that he thought he was that David or that they were writing about him. Absolutely hilarious. All of the little ones in our family have enjoyed David Smells! They think it is great fun. It is just a cute book for little folks.

Seriously??? I would give this less than one star if I could. This story is stupid. They scold the child for trying to pet the dog?! The child tries to eat a sucker with a big stuck to it?! They make fun of him for having a dirty diaper?! I changed the words when reading this to my daughter because it is inappropriate in my opinion. Glad I didn't pay money for this book!!

While the idea of a book for children about the natural process of defecation might have seemed like a good idea, the scratch-and-sniff turd on page 7, I feel, was going too far.

We love all of the David books by David Shannon. We started reading them when my 9 year old was about 4 or 5. Funny enough, or sadly enough, what we loved most about them was the fact that my son had done just about everything in the books that David did. In fact, when reading them, I often changed the name David to my son's name which he found extemely amusing.

I was delighted to see that they now have board books out for the Diaper set! My youngest is 21 months and while I don't see any tendencies of him getting into quite the mischief that his older brother (and David) did, he loves to sit on my lap for his bedtime stories and look at the pictures just the same. The art work is bright, colorful and eye catching...just the sort of thing that catches a baby's attention.

I noticed in some reviews there were complaints about the lack of words in these books. That is part of the charisma of them! My son and I sit together and we point out and talk about the things that David is doing in them.

We love, love, love these books!

I got hooked on the "David" series of books while teaching preschoolers who LOVED to hear of David's adventures.

I was pleased one day about a year and a half ago when I saw this one being sold, along with the other "Diaper David" books. These are hardboard books perfect for ages 3 and under with the same charisma found in the other David books that makes it's reader giggle and laugh, or even sympathize with his shenanigens. He's a hoot and we own every book about David (and all the books the author has wrote) because of how much we enjoy them!

In this particular book , with very few words, you learn about the 5 senses... seeing, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. It's comical yet educational. My almost 2 year old LOVES it and all the others.

If you have not read a "David" book then get one.... you and your child will love it! For those of you who own or have read a "David" book then I don't really need to say much else because you know how great these books are!

David Shannon, David Smells! (Blue Sky Press, 2005)

Of the three Diaper David books, David Smells!, a book about the five senses, is my son's current favorite, the one he reaches for most often of the three and wants me to read to him. Now, I have no idea why this is; all three are wonderfully illustrated, with short, fun text blocks and enough repetition (even between the books, which were obviously conceived and written as one project--this is not something one normally thinks about in pre-lit, but it turns out it's an important idea) to nudge the kid that much further towards speech. And needless to say, my kid is not your kid, who may be more crazy about Oops! or No, David! right now. But I can tell you that my eleven-month-old budding reviewer has expressed a definite preference--at least this month--for this one, and that's good enough for me. *** ½

My daughter thinks that "David Smells" is hilarious. We go over the 5 senses together, and she gets excited before we even get to the "stinky" page - when we do reach it, she says, "stinky!"

I don't understand the negativity over the book. yes the sketches are rough (they're SKETCHES for pete's sake), and the book is short. But it teaches the 5 senses and we find the illustrations and details endearing.

Not sure why people are talking about a "poo"? Our book does not have that.
