More than a biography of the Hebrew King David, this book covers the period from just before the death of Eli through the ascension of Solomon to the throne, a period of about eighty years. The author uses extensive quotes from the Bible to support his story. However, he goes beyond a mere retelling of the events and takes the reader inside the mind and psyche of the characters of this epoch of biblical history. One can feel the anguish that Samuel goes through when the Hebrew elders demand of him that he appoint a king over them as the other nations have. The author takes us deep into the connection between God and man as he weaves a story around the biblical passages and characters. Throughout the book, key themes and concepts are explored and expanded upon to give the reader an insightful view into the lives of the people portrayed in the Bible.

I found this novel to be very entertaining and spiritually enlightening. For someone who is only beginning to understand the Bible, it was a challenging read. By that I mean philosophically and spiritually challenging. It sparked an interest in me to see if the actual biblical character was really such a complicated character. After some research and questioning of my own, I found the book to be acurate in its facts but not boring. Crumpler's writing technique captured my interests as a reader and as a Christian. I definately recommend this to anyone interested in biblical history or that just wants to be intellectually and spiritually stimulated!
