3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhere To The South August 24, 2004
Format:Audio CD
David Wiffen's recorded career is minimal, to say the least. This disc was a bit of a rarity soon after its release, and its sombre-voiced author, despite the support of the more ambitious, Bruce Cockburn, never took off. The songs are pleasant, rather world-weary and resigned. I doubt anyone, fellow Canadian troubadour, Joni Mitchell included, have written more extensively on the plight of the travelling muso, and its inherent dangers. His second offering, 'Coast To Coast', is a superior effort in every way; more at ease with itself and a production that suits Wiffen's ennui. But the good news is that True North, in Canada, got Wiffen back in the studio, 1999, to record again. And if you're like me and your Wiffen discs are a little the worse for wear, the best of those to early 70s discs have been given an update by the weary one. The desperate edge is no longer in the baritone depths, but the handful of fresh compositions, eg.'Harlequin', are the equal of his 70s stuff. Whatever the reasons for the quarter century absence from the recording studio, this is a most welcome return to form. You can only get this from Canada, so far as I know and it took 3 months to reach this somewhere, far South ( a few more kilometers than Wiffen would've conceived!).

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT VOICE/ STRONG SONGS/ AVERAGE PRODUCTION August 13, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Finally got my hands on this recording from, thank you, Amazon, after waiting, I guess, 20 years. Fantasy Records
production values were the typical early 70's singer-songwriter pasty cover up, when horns and strings were added to
tracks to make them more accessible. Stark instrumentation would've been better, but not back in those days. Even
Sweet baby James T's early albums had tunes adorned with unnecessary horns and strings.
There's one more early David Wiffen recording "Live at the Bunkhouse Coffee House" that is also very rare.
Maybe the folks who released this current recording should've added those tunes to these to fill it out and then us
David Wiffen fans would have his complete recorded works. I see it advertised here for $2,800.00 for a vinyl copy. Too much $ for me.
