Flavor Name: So African Green Rooibos Verified Purchase
All 4 South African herbal teas - green (unfermented) rooibos tea, red (fermented) rooibos tea, unfermented honeybush tea, and fermented honeybush tea - can thrive only in southwestern South Africa. Green rooibos tea is substantially higher in beneficial phytochemicals (many different types of polyphenols) than red rooibos tea. According to one study, polyphenols comprise 41 percent of the total solid matter in green rooibos tea extract but only 30 percent of the total solid matter in red rooibos tea extract. However, several studies say that drinking one cup of red rooibos tea would be just as healthy for us as drinking one cup of green rooibos tea. The reason is that one tea bag of red rooibos tea can only be steeped in hot water about twice while one tea bag of green rooibos tea can be steeped in hot water 4 or 5 times. In other words, red rooibos tea leaves deplete themselves better than green rooibos tea leaves when dipped into hot water. That's why scientific studies agree that the first cup of red rooibos tea contains just as much beneficial phytochemicals as the first cup of green rooibos tea. Overall, both rooibos teas and both honeybush teas are about 90% as healthy for us to drink as green tea. Both rooibos teas and both honeybush teas are caffeine free and tannin free. Aspalathus (rooibos = redbush) and Cyclopia (honeybush) are 2 different genera in the same subfamily, Faboideae (edible legumes), of the same family, Fabaceae (legumes). Soybeans, green beans, sweet peas, chickpeas, lentils, fenugreek seeds, peanuts, clover sprouts, astragalus root powder, and all common beans are also extremely healthy-to-eat members of subfamily Faboideae.Read more ›

Flavor Name: Ceylon Op Black Verified Purchase
Davidson Ceylon OP black 16oz. This black tea has a good large leaf size as the grade is Orange Pekoe (which refer to black tea leaf size not the flavor). Produces a good color after 4 to 5 minutes of brewing (mashing) in a pot. if you have a cool room or having tea on the deck, get a cover on the pot to keep it hot(a ski hat is fine, mines red). This tea is hard to over brew so a few extra minutes will not ruin it, usually after first cups are poured a 2nd addition of freshly boiled water will give a satisfactory refill. Best served with milk but can take lemon instead or milk & sugar. however less sugar required than for smaller leaf grades as this is less bitter. For my early morning tea the Davidsons english breakfast is also a good choice.

If you have not brewed an OP before & your experience is with loose leaf english breakfast an extra spoonful is required (as the is leaf larger same size spoonful is a smaller weight of tea) or tea bags the brew time is 1 to 2 minutes longer for the first cups to be ready to poured. But will not produce as much tannin which causes dry or bitter after taste, often associated with over brewed tea of the smaller leaf sizes. Additionally benefit our dental hygienist has less stain removing to do on our 6 monthly check up! we drink a lot of tea!!

It may take you a few trial brews to get used to this milder, more subtle style of black tea but worth it. Best for when you have time to relax & enjoy the view from the deck as you sip this. excellent with home baked goods too! more cake anyone?

Disclosure: I am an expat Englishman living in the states so I have a preference for black teas with milk added. However i do drink chinese style tea without milk this, of course.

Other tea I subscribe to from Davidson.
English breakfast (prefer to irish breakfast blend as the Irish has a more "malty overtone").
Formosa style oolong tea-this is extremely good too

Flavor Name: Silver Needles Verified Purchase
Silver Needles is the most prized type of white tea one can buy. Davidson's Tea gives you this fine tea at a good price for the volume of leaves.

This tea has a white fur on each little leaf. Supposedly, this is because it is picked from the top two leaf layers of early (immature) tea. For those who have not had Silver Needles before, it has a much more subtle tea flavor than does green tea. For some, this may not be as pleasant to drink, so before you put out the money for an entire pound, you may want to try it in a less expensive way first. For myself, I do prefer green and even black tea, but white tea has some health advantages I seek.

As others have mentioned, you can definitely get at least three good brews out of this tea. Also, the tea does not leave you jittery from caffeine as similar amounts of green or black tea would. This is, in part, because it has less caffeine than the others, appears to have a stronger concentration of differing antioxidants, and it has more theobromine and theanine--both of which soothe and calm people. You are left amazingly alert but calm as you drink this. If you have something to do that requires a lot of concentration, drinking this tea greatly helps you focus. I cannot fully describe just how strong this effect is, but your mind functions as well as if you had just had a great night's sleep, coupled with a vigorous workout (depending on how much tea you used or how long the initial brew took -- the more the better). The effect seems to be most noticeable starting 30 minutes after drinking the first cup and lasts many hours.

Without a doubt, the tea tastes best if brewed at something below 170 degrees (probably 160 is best). I have taken to using a kitchen thermometer if I'm in doubt as to its relative temperature.
