WOW...,
By Joseph D. Losch "Nissan Tech and death/black ... (Bartlett, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dawn of the Apocalypse (Audio CD)
This has to be one of the BEST death metal albums EVER. The first I ever heard of Vital Remains was from "Dechristianize" because I saw Glen Benton did the vocals. I like Deicide, so I figured I'd pick this one up.This completely blows the aforementioned album out of the water. Sure, the drums and guitars sound great on "Dechristianize", but Dave Suzuki used drum triggers on that album and some of the guitar playing was so fast it was fuzzy. The drums on here were a bit slower but sounded a TON better. Some parts are slow and chug along at almost a marching speed. Some other parts are blindingly fast. The twin guitar harmonies are unbelievable and need to be heard. Now the vocals. If you don't like death metal vocals don't buy this album. Glen Benton has a deep, decipherable growl. However, I believe Thorn's vocals are even better on here mainly because he doesn't layer his growls and screams over one another, rather he uses them at separate times. Sure, on a studio album this might not be a problem, but have you ever heard Deicide's "When Satan Lives?" It's hard to replicate. This is one of my favorite albums even after 2 listens. "Behold the Throne of Chaos" is worth every penny and sums up all I have said. Just buy it!

Too bad some people think Mr. Benton is on this, he's not here, thats why this is one of the good Vital Remains releases. This is the closest to the recent stuff, the really fast tempos and angry vocals, but the better Vital Remains are the other ones featuring Jeff Gruslin on vocals and Forever Underground with Joe Lewis on vocals, and then Thorn singing on this one. Lots more groove and variations in the music, The Benton stuff is just relentless pummelin'..If you like these guys start with Horrors Of Hell, than Let Us Pray and Into Cold Darkness....Important Death Metal, from masters of the genre...Kneel..!!

Brutality Defined!,

This review is from: Dawn of the Apocalypse (Audio CD)
Vital Remains has always been a heavily under-recognized force in the extreme Metal community, and with the release of Dawn of the Apocalypse, they will indisputably break free of the stigma of being `just another Satanic Death Metal band'! Yes, they may follow the `Left Hand Path', but taking a deeper look into the lyrics and music on the album, I see the band walking a similar path to that of the irreverent ANGELCORPSE. Both bands have undertaken a Crusade to expose the world's blind ignorance and crush it in a hailstorm of blood and fire! Dawn of the Apocalypse is the latest chapter in the band's war on human lethargy, and with such a bombastic arsenal of visceral energy at their disposal, turning the other cheek is not an option! Vital Remains has mastered the art of sophisticated musical warfare, by employing the forceful wrath of foreboding, merciless vocals, the deceptive charm of sweltering guitar melody, and a rancorous death knell represented by a rampaging percussive offensive! This is just too callous to be true...
