5.0 out of 5 stars Immersion in birdsong and natural environmental sounds., March 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn Chorus (Audio CD)
This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural sounds of dawn with birdsongs featured on all but 2 of the tracks. There is no man-made noise or musical accompaniment. The recordings by Gordon Hempton are renowned for their natural aural quality as well as the extreme attention to inclusion of only natural sounds. This is very similar to the World of Birds recording by North Sound, but is of superior quality. Recommended for all birders and lovers of nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing recordings; wish I found them sooner, November 9, 2004

These recordings are spectacular. You can feel (and hear) the passion that Gordon Hempton puts into these very special albums. Dawn Chorus is one of my favorites, but the Old Growth ones are incredible too. These are not like your usual environmental CDs -- the precision and care really shines thru the quality of the sound.

For anyone that has spent time in the remote wilderness these recordings bring back a flood of peace and memories. The nice balance of birds, owls and insects -- it just makes you feel as if you are there -- whether sitting in the South on a warm evening listening to cicadas, or hearing a spotted owl in the Pacific Northwest. I did both of those this year, and its just amazing to hear these captured while I sit here in dreary Los Angeles.

Highly recommended -- six stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, audiophile-level recording of normal nature sounds, April 30, 2001

I really enjoyed the technical aspects of this recording - that it was recorded with high-quality microphones in a dummy head. It sounds fantastic through headphones! My gripes are not with the sound, but that the liner notes only say "Colorado Vista", or "Arkansas Woods" (examples, not actual track titles). I would like to know more about how it was recorded and exactly where. I would even like the detail of a point on a map. Also, Gordon's recordings are all Samplers. I can't really lose myself in "being there" when I know it all is going to end in 2.5 minutes when it transitions from Arkansas to Missouri.

I'm also starting to fiddle with quality microphones and making my own nature recordings, so my real reason for purchasing this was to see how a professional might mic' nature.
