5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written!
This is a beautifully written book. One of my favorite lines is, "You give me mornings-after filled with the love you promised the night before." The description of each character unfolds along with the story, you feel the action and drama as it is happening. 1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed what a let down
As much as I loved her firts two books as much I was let down by this book. I compared notes with an amercian professor and very close friend who has been in the closet for a long time but is now out and we both felt very let down by the book. it felt oddly old-fashioned, troubles of old. Too predictable a plot. I am convinced she could do much better as her two...

This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
This is a beautifully written book. One of my favorite lines is, "You give me mornings-after filled with the love you promised the night before." The description of each character unfolds along with the story, you feel the action and drama as it is happening. It is a story the reader feels and experiences with the characters instead of watching them play out each scene.

I really liked the action throughout, the characters are very active and show- up in many different locations. I especially enjoyed the way Ms. Martin crafted the attack chapter by keeping the reader moving back and forth from one charcater to the other. It kept me on edge.

After reading her other books, I am convinced that Marianne Martin is easily at the top of her genre. She writes exciting not sappy love stories that are filled with memorable characters, important lesbian issues, and delicious love scenes.

I highly recommend this book as well as Martin's trilogy, which includes Legacy of Love, Love in the Balance, and Never Ending. Martin is a "don't miss" author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done!, November 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
There are romances and then there are love stories as written by authors like Marianne Martin.

Dawn of the Dance is an excellent example of how much substance a love story can have. For us love is never simple, it is a complexity of emotion - care, fear, guilt, banging up against a strong physical desire. Thus the struggle for peace and happiness that makes for Martin's wonderful story.

I was drawn quickly into the character of Moni Matteson. I felt for her, for young women like her who struggled for acceptance and love from such a young age. Then, I found myself wondering what I would do if I were ever in Katherine's position. Is there ever a true enough love worth risking so much for?

This is a thought-provoking and very well-written book. I particularly love the writer's style, which keeps me continuously wondering, worrying, and reading. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, May 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I was very glad I ordered it. I have taught in a community college, and now teach at a four year college. The situations in which the characters find themselves in this story are regretfully still occuring and I find myself envious of the progress that some of my collegues enjoy at other universities.

I thought it interesting that the author handled the controversial subject of teacher-student relations quite delicately - having the student placed in a teaching situation with the teacher first. She handled it with conscience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the love connection between the charcters. They were unique in their personalities and backgrounds, and in their approach to finding happiness in their lives. The length of the seduction, "the dance", was wonderful - love as a mental process as well as a physical one.

This was an excellent love story, and an eye-opener if you think we have no more work to do in bringing our educational institutions into the new millenium.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Marianne K. Martin yet!, July 20, 2000
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
Ms. Martin is a skilled storyteller. The main characters, Moni and Katherine are complex and seem real. The author catapults us alternately between romance, eroticism, high drama, and just a bit of humor to keep the story from becoming too intense. This novel is a vivid portrait of two women and the dramatic circumstances that form the backdrop as they fall in love. You will be on the edge of your seat throughout the love and the pain. I recommend this novel highly!

4.0 out of 5 stars I know these people, and I like them, January 26, 2000
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
I just finished Dawn of the Dance and was compelled to take a moment to let someone know how much I enjoyed this book. Ms. Martin draws out her characters in such a way that you feel you know them or you want to know them. These are women I'd like to sit around a fire with. I understand this is a trilogy....I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next one

4.0 out of 5 stars A REALLY NICE READ!, July 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
The perplexities and hatred that One often encounters when "in-the-life", rang TRUE and hauntingly REAL in this book. Although the love story seemed to fade into the background, I really enjoyed this. Marianne Martin's writing will definitely keep One entranced!

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering, Visceral Story of Love, February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
If you are a reader who wants to be drawn into a contemporary story of empowering, visceral love between two emotionally mature and complicated women,...You will not be disapointed but rather enraptured in the slow fall and the sustained dramatic rush between teacher and student, entrapped in a university setting in the midwest.
As always, Marianne K. Martin weaves within the love story, contemporary issues and obstacles that lesbian women face when their love in this scenario is threatened by the archaic, oppressive, hierarchy of some of today's institutions of so called higher education.

Marianne K. Martin with Dawn of the Dance, Legacy of Love, Love in the Balance, and her latest, Mirrors, proves to be one of America's most talented of new emerging writers of Romance novels for women. We look forward to a long and prolific career!

5.0 out of 5 stars It Made Me Dance with Excitement, July 25, 2001
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)
I don't think I've read too many books that I would call a "romantic thriller" - at least not for lesbians. Somehow Marianne Martin had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next and all the while the romantic tension kept rising as well. What a rollercoaster this was, and at times very, very funny. But even the humor didn't break the pace of the drama. I heartily recommend this to all fans of thrillers or romance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous! Emotionally moving novel, January 5, 2006
This review is from: Dawn of the Dance (Paperback)

I absolutely loved this story. The writing had me consumed with the characters on the second page. I was immediately back in high school. I have always loathed bullies. I remember standing up to the bullies in high school on behalf of a couple classmates who were too shy or intimidated to fend for themselves and getting no where - so terrible.

The heartbreaking first romance was beautifully depicted.

Every moment between Monica and Katherine (Moni's romance in grad school) was a jewel. The writing is a wonderful delight and I did not want the story to end (although I was glad to see them leave the university that was horribly anti-female).

My heart really broke for Paige and I would love to read a novel with her story.

Do not miss this book - I know I will read it again.
