Book Description

1978
The classic novel that spawned the blockbuster cult film. Few motion pictures have achieved true cult status. George Romero's zombie trilogy-- Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead--are such films: grisly, innovative studies in horror that have shocked and entertained millions of viewers. They are rightly ranked among the true classics of modern horror cinema.

In Dawn of the Dead, the ghouls from Night of the Living Dead have returned with an insatiable hunger for human flesh, and a message that haunts the human mind. Young and old, black and white, their former lives forgotten, they fill the streets of our cities and run wild through our shopping centers, consuming everyone and everything they touch with the cure of living death. As four ordinary people take refuge in an overrun shopping mall and arm themselves against the onslaught, Dawn of the Dead becomes more than a bloodbath. In a world where life is a commodity, where sruvival is bought with guns, and where satisfaction is having free run of a department store, the dead will finally rule us all . . .

Robert Ebert called Dawn of the Dead "an ultimate horror film." It is that and more: a landmark film, and a powerful novel of a world not too distant from our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a horror novel and film, DAWN is a way of life!, May 27, 1999
By
A Customer (Madison Hts, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dawn of the Dead (Hardcover)
Simply this: The film, DAWN OF THE DEAD, changed my life back in 1979 when I was a kid. I honestly and truly never have been quite the same since. Seriously. The film novelization sticks relatively close to the actual film, though does add some interesting little expositionary passages, conversations, and character motivations--not to mention a bit more background into the characters' lives. If you love the film you'll definitely love the novel! It's gripping, chilling, and mind-bogglingly exciting and addictive. What a story and what an epicly grand and inspired stage Romero chooses to play it all out on! Amazing stuff...at once nightmarish and bleak, yet also life-affirming, hopeful, and humorous. Tell me Romero isn't a genius (this and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is all the proof I need!). This book is just a rousing rollercoaster ride--as is the film. I eat, drink, and sleep this novel (and the film, which even inspired me to publish a bi-monthly zine devoted to it), and you will too. A masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being there! Zombies Rock!, December 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn of the Dead (Hardcover)
This version of Dawn Of The Dead is a must have! With Full color stills from the movie, you can really appreciate Tom Savini's craftsmanship. Even though it's out of print, a few copies are out there somewhere. Try to find one if you simply love ZOMBIES!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great adaption to a horror icon, January 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Susanna Sparrow did a wonderful job with this book. While staying true to the characters of Fran, Roger and Peter, she also gave them a little something extra you can't see in the movie.
She allowed us to hear their thoughts.
By doing this the characters become even more real and I really enjoyed this book.
To those who want to buy the hardcover it is only 6 by 9, so its not very big compared to most hardcover editions.
No zombie fan can say they have it all if this book is't in their library.
Even after 30 years it's still one of the best books out there because of the origination of the story.
