Editorial Reviews

Dawn Upshaw is one of the most versatile and talented of a new generation of American singers, equally at home on the concert platform and the musical stage. In this specially recorded late-night recital from the Royal Albert Hall during the 1996 Promenade Concerts, Dawn Upshaw ranges widely over the gamut of American operatic arias and popular songs from the 1920s to the present day. Ms Upshaw gives a truly wonderful performance, full of expression, harmony and sublime singing.

My wife and I are both big fans of Dawn Upshaw, particularly her non-classical performances of songs by Sondheim, Bernstein, Vernon Duke, etc. This DVD has a terrific collection of such pieces (taped in 1996) and is very enjoyable to watch. Both picture and audio quality are stellar. Note that the audio is recorded in uncompressed 48 KHz PCM instead of compressed Dolby Digital, which makes it particularly easy on the ears but may confuse some DVD players. We had to adjust a setting on our DVD player in order to hear the audio track properly. Only one negative point to note: the disc's menus have annoying background music using a short repeating sound clip of Upshaw's own performance -- quite obnoxious, but we can forgive this given how enjoyable the recordings themselves are.

Always great to see a consummate solo performer hold an audience of several thousand in the palm of her hand.
This was a "Late Night" Prom in the Royal Albert Hall, and ideally it's a DVD for late-night viewing too!
The versatile London Sinfonietta really 'swing' under the experienced guidance of Eric Stern, and a youthful audience that might well have been lending rapt attention to the music of Berg or Ligeti the night before, is so attentive and appreciative, (and quiet), that even the huge arena of the RAH becomes a cabaret venue for 70 minutes.
No show-off 'patter' between numbers, no lighting gimmicks.....Dawn Upshaw is a self-effacing artiste putting herself entirely at the service of the music. Bernstein's "Lonely Town" is enough to dampen the eyes of those of us who live a long way from home. Had this song been in West Side Story it might well have been a 'standard' along with several of the songs from that masterpice.
Perfect.

Radiant voice! If only Leonard Bernstein could have heard Dawn sing "Glitter and be Gay". This performance is Grammy worthy.

Dawn is simply the best singer around, who can present music in a very enjoyable environment. In addition, Dawn is simply a very nice and attractive person to see any place.
