This review is from: Dawn (Audio CD)
This CD contains two magnificient performances (in the modes of Segah and Homayun) by Parviz Meshkatian, one of the great living masters of the santur and one of Iran's national treasures. On a microcosmic scale, when I listen to this CD, I relish in his impeccable ornamentation, immaculate technique, and exquisite re-creation of gushehs. His playing is supple as he maintains warmth of tone and elegant grace. On a macrocosmic scale, both performances (particularly Homayun), embody the aesthetic of "Owj", the large-scale gradual, architectural rise toward ecstasy -- a sense of grandeur holds together each tiny gem of perfection. The performances are deeply moving, going straight to the soul. Dastgah-e Segah leaves me breathless and gives me goosebumps, while Homayun, in its gentleness and delicacy, contains some of the most sublimely poignant moments I've heard.

Not to be missed are the superb zarb performances by Nasser Farhangfar and Jamshid Mohebi.

At the risk of sounding sensational, I'll say that this CD is one of my favorite CDs of all time. This CD will appeal not only to Persian connosieurs (who will indeed delight in this gem of a disc): any person unaquainted with Persian classical music will immediately become seduced in this rich musical tradition.
