A fine debut,

First of all, Immolation is like no other death metal band you've heard before. They don't sound like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, or Suffocation. On here, they haven't yet developed their innovative style completely, especially the dissonant riffs and bizarre melodies, but the riffing is still innovative. Its kind of like Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness, an album where they hadn't yet reached their full potential, but still had enough integrity to make them rise above the rest of the bands in the genre. There is a real emphasis on the low end, especially the vocals which are probably some of the lowest I've ever heard. A few weird riffs pop up here and there, but for the most part, the emphasis is on pure brutality, but done in a really classy way. Many bands have tried to copy Immolation's style, but very few have actually come close to doing it.

Worthy death metal,

This is probably the best first album I've heard from a death metal band since Suffocation's "Effigy..". The music is tight, fast, and chaotic. The rhythms aren't quite as intricate as Suffo, but the harmonies and lyrics are more interesting. Also, this album has some of my favorite cover art of all time. If you like death metal, buy this CD.

Pure Chaos!!!!!!!,

This band, together with Suffocation, have the ability to beat the hell outa you!! They do it sonically!! Insane out of tempo (on purpose) drumming, no melody or harmony at all, guitars that create a wall of sound and vocals that sound like a friggin bear was growling. The album is very complex, they use whacked out false harmonics, relentless and very fast kick drumming to create the aural intensity of...who the hell knows? The deffinite highlight is the song "Those Left Behind", it makes you feel hate, depression, anger , rage and revenge!! A sort of muddy production aids in creating the caustic atmosphere tha Immo is. This is the ultimate death metal band (together with Suffo....but they called it quits) Purchase is MANDATORY

After searching for many years for this, sadly, deleted album I finally tracked a copy down to a second hand store. And the wait was worth it!This album was an instant classic on it's release in the early 1990's. The sheer intense fury contained within it is mindblowing. The guitars twist and turn through angular, non-conventional riffs, and atonal solos. This is complimented by gut-wrenching bass and some of the best death metal "singing" you'll hear. Lyrically it's rooted in Satanism, but written poetically and with such meaning you DO believe that Ross Dolan and co's beliefs are rooted South of Heaven. The first four songs, "Into Everlasting Fire", "Despondent Souls", "Dawn of Possession", and my personal favourite, "Those Left Behind" are superlative slices of death metal. The rest of the album does waver a little here, with only "No Forgiveness" and "Burial Ground" matching the standards set by the opening quartet. Still the album ends on a high note with the lyrically malevolent "Immolation". For me, personally, Immolation never topped this album. I've heard some of their other albums, "Failure of the Gods" and "Close to a World Below" but they never really left the same impact on me. Do yourself a favour and hunt this album down. It is a bona-fide gem.

On Immolation's first release you can hear their unique style that will be further developed on later releases. This is a very angry and raw cd, and it absolutley a must have for any Immolation fan. Trust me, it is worth the high price tag, this is a classick! The album kicks off with Into Everlasting Fire, and the way Ross spews the lyrics is just unbelieveable, you've got to hear the intensity of this recording. They didn't just start this band to jump on the "death metal band wagon", you can hear the anger and seriousness in the lyrics and music. Despondent Souls is another one of my favorites, to me it kind of talks about how the followers or christ-stains are prematurely dead by not being able to live out their lives they way they want to, instead they have to follow ways of centuries ago and by blind faith. The title track is another classick as is all of the tracks. Songs like Those Left Behind and After My Prayers seem to talk about how we are going to "burn for eternity" just because we don't believe or feel anything about christ-stain-ism. Craig's drumming on this cd and the next "Here In After" is just fu#$ing awesome, his syncapated drumming is honed to perfection. The guitar riffs and solos are the classick whacky style Immolation signature sound as always! Once again, get this cd if you in anyway like Immolation. This is one of the most fiercest and intense debuts I have ever heard. Highly recommended even though it can be 30 to 50 dollars, it's worth it!

their first and perhaps best,
This review is from: Dawn of Possession (Audio CD)
doesn't the old immolation logo make you nostalgic? before "technical death metal" became a boring, soulless fad, immolation helped death metal transform from more guttural and morbid thrash metal into a serious artform by using weird, suffocatingly dense dual guitar chromatics in a holistic, emotionally relevant way; songs are arranged with a labyrinthine, "big picture" methodology and the atmosphere is one of theological despair. most metal bands recognize the absurdity of organized religion and feel free to mock it with trivial blasphemy, but immolation's conclusion on judeochristianity is a moral rather than logical one: non serviam. meanwhile, ross's deep, watery growls are inimitable and the leadwork is truly malevolent.a rich, challenging album; multiple, and i mean multiple listenings are required to truly absorb this. if you listen to bands like the faceless, beneath the massacre and necrophagist, it's over your head.

this is a mix of incantation, possessed, and morbid angel; that is to say, very good death metal. excellent pocket grooves with not too many blast beats. good cover art reminiscent of hell awaits and blessed are the sick.
