Pleasing,
By Raider Jack "Jackie D Gray-Romeyn" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)

The biggest question surrounding this is why, indeed, a woman like Dawn Robinson who easily handled lead vocalist chores for the likes of En Vogue and Lucy Pearl, has been on the R&B scene for WELL over 10 years, has proven that she has mass appeal on a variety of genres, yet could not have the assistance of such high profile producers, like Jimmy Jam & Terri Lewis, Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, hey, at this point even Puff, oh 'scuse me, P. Diddy (geez) would have been okay. The point being a woman of Dawn's caliber/talent deserved much more than new/unknown producers. The end result is a CD worth getting simply because it is Dawn but only a few standout cuts which fuel the CD. I certainly don't regret buying it and if you generally appreciate Dawn's talent, you won't either. But you know, it's like eating Chinese....excellent when you finish the meal but in a couple of hours, you are starving....In any event, I look forward to her next outing because I honestly think she has what it takes. Hopefully, she will have garnered the artistic respect she deserves and getter a better caliber of producer.

Trying to keep up with the times...badly,

To say that this record was a disappointment would suggest that I thought it might be good and then, upon listening to it, that it failed to meet my expectations. Fortunately, I can say that this much is not true. Her interviews during the noticeably brief, quiet press junket she went on to promote this record always gave the impression that she had resigned herself to this record more than believed in it and after even just a casual listen you can understand why: it's utterly non-progressive, and with the state of R&B music today, that's not even close to being a good thing. The record sounds smooth and well-produced, but some of the vocal arrangements try to make her voice do the work of a trio or a quartet and it just ain't happenin'. That, and the music just doesn't go anywhere we haven't heard a hundred times just TODAY. Actually, I take that back: it goes everywhere. In what must be an attempt to keep up with the kids today (most of whom have stolen notes from En Vogue's journal) we are subjected to the Destiny's Child rip-off song (#10 How Long"), the Missy Elliot rip-off song (#3 "Party, Party"), the Aaliyah rip-off song (#8 "Fed Up"), the half-of-the-already-wack-radio rip-off song (#5 "Envious" and #12 "You Will Never") and the I-don't-need-En Vogue rip-off song (which I guess makes it another Destiny's Child rip-off song; #6 "Meaning of a Woman"). The record starts off promising with the first track, but then veers into questionable territory soon after. #7 - "I Don't Know Why" - saves this record from a pure 1 star (read my 2 stars as 1 and a half).

A Treat Worth Waiting For,
By Tourmaline (ATL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dawn (Audio CD)
I've been waiting for a solo album from Dawn Robinson for a couple of years now. Though she has been involved with groups of talented singers, her vocals have always seemed to stand out from the rest. This album's release took a lot longer than I initially hoped it would, but it was worth the wait. My personal favorites are Set It Off(an instant favorite that will command repeated listens), Still(a tight rock-type track), Don't Give Up and Read It In Your Eyes. Those fans of Dawn's work with EnVogue and Lucy Pearl will pleased with this album because it is a combination of the two styles of music. But Dawn Robinson's sassy vocals and commanding style are what make this album distinct. I recommend this album and hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Set It Off for Dawn,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn (Audio CD)
I was almost afraid of buying Dawn's new CD when I first heard Envious until I realized that whenever I buy a CD, there will always be at least one song I may not care much for. I also realized that this is Dawn Robinson's album. She has that hipnotic vocals I love listening to over and over again. All I can say is that this new music of Dawn was worth purchasing. The first song "Set It Off" definitely set this album off. It was hard for me to listen pass this song because I could not get enough this smooth flowing track. The rest of this album pass the first track flowed really smoothly. Every tracks fell into place where you did not skip the rest of the tracks after hearing a few seconds. Another addictive track on this album is "Get Up Again" which is more about encouraging one self much like Aaliyah's "Try Again" but with softer beats. Another track I love is "You Will Never" with a surprising ad lib which came to no surprise from Dawn. You gotta love her. This album has the potential to explode into the music scene like Alicia Keys album. With the right promoting effort, this album should do really well.

Lucy Pearl Lot's It's Girl, and WE HAVE GAINED A STAR,
This review is from: Dawn (Audio CD)
After having a history with both EnVogue, and Lucy Pearl Dawn Robinson has been a shining voice to be reckoned with since the early 90's on such EnVogue hit's Never Gonna Get It, Free Your Mind, Giving Him Something He Can Feel, and Don't Let Go(LOVE). Not to mention, her hit with Lucy Pearl (Dance Tonight)! In this her first solo effort Robinson steps into her own giving us that Glam R&B Rock as she only knows' how to give it. She really is the Tina Turner of OUR generation. On classics like Set It Off, this opener set's the pace for the album. Then we get funky with "Still" and "Party Party." The epitome of the album would have to be the inspirational ballad "Get Back up Again." Dawn even gives us a reminicent of Destiny's Child type song in which I love on FED UP ... Truly a pop hit! Dawn showcases so many vibes of old school and new school on this album that it appeals to any listener or lover of Rock, and R&B! Truly a gem, way to go Dawn! Go buy the album, it's perfect for a roadtrip, relaxing at home, or getting ready to get your "PARTY PARTY" on.

This album kind of slid into stores, sure we knew Dawn Robinson was recording a solo album, but I never thought it would be out as soon as it was. And you know what? It was worth the wait. This cd combines some of the funk from En Vogue, and Lucy Pearl, while adding her own flavor. Its mostly an uptempo set, with some really nice ballads. The songs show a lot of attitude from Dawn, whos vocals are really nice and strong. Some of the highlights include the first single "Envious", which is catchy and irresistible at the same time. "Fed Up" and "How Long" are great uptempos too. "Set It Off", "Party, Party", and "You Will Never" are also great. "Get Up Again" is a touching ballad, very sad but inspiring at the same time. I think if you enjoy En Vogue and Lucy Pearl, you will like this cd!

if you like Destiny's Child, you'll think this CD is bootylicious. If you're like me and don't, then you'll probably think this CD is just plain booty.I love Dawn. I loved her with Lucy Pearl and although I was sad that didn't work out, I was looking fw to her solo album. I thought maybe she'd do that rocky kinda stuff that she does so well. Nope. Just formulaic pop. There are a few nice cuts on the CD, but for the most part, it's petty and immature. Everybody's jealous, everybody's hatin, blah, blah, blah. I guess she's right--I'm hatin. Hatin myself for buying this dayum CD.

Dawn Robinson came back sexy and smooth for this one. This is one of the best cd's this year. Truly Dawn's vocals are enticing and sexy, smooth, the beats are laid back man if you can't get your freak on or relax off this someting is wrong. Dawn proved she can deliver the goods without Envouge or Lucy Pearl.

A pretty good CD. She's acting up on "Fed Up" and "Set It Off" which I think will take this project pretty far with the proper airplay. Producers (PAJAM) for the track "Fed Up" did a superb job! "Read It In My Eyes" is pretty laid back with a nice groove tempo. I love the bass line in that cut. I think you all should give this CD a try.

Very Disappointed!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawn (Audio CD)
In my opinion, the songs on this album are poorly written. It's almost insulting for someone with such vocal talent to sing such trash. Also, I don't think she's working up to her full potential. I don't doubt that she's talented enough to have a successful solo career, but this album is very disappointing. I if could, I would take it back to the store and get my money back. I'm really surprised. It's not like she's new to the business. She should know better!
