Book Description

June 27, 2003
Let No Day Dawn that the Animals Cannot Share spotlights human kind's deeply rooted emotional, cultural, ethical and spiritual bonds to the animal kingdom, wild and domestic, and identifies areas in which we have fallen short of our stewardship duties for scores of precious and irreplaceable fellow creatures. An additional treat follows the poetry. The author has been an animal behaviorist, trainer, caretaker and advocate for decades and shares her most humorous and poignant tales from these intensely rewarding inter-species interactions. Enhancing the volume to a point of utter magnificence are illustrations by Emese Dian, a talent new to the art world whose love of her subjects is evident in her renditions. Each drawing carries the very essence of her subject, breathing life onto two-dimensional pages.

About the Author

Kristine M Smith is a self-proclaimed "Dawn Quixote" who has sought all her life for peace - the peace to be found in knowing that everyone can make a positive, lasting difference. "It is everyone's destiny and obligation to leave something behind that shows what we were made of while we were earth-bound and ambulatory in the flesh." She adds: "You don't have to be Mother Teresa or Albert Schweitzer to matter. Thank God for Mother Teresa and for so many other spiritual giants; I treasure them with all my heart. But just treading more lightly in our daily walk and reflecting on our impact on others - human and animal - exercises our spiritual muscles in wonderful ways. God gave us dominion over animals not so we can inflict scars, but so we can shepherd them to safe havens." Foreword by DeForest Kelley.

And now... for a brief non-animal bio (since you've probably already read the animal-centric one):

Author Kristine M Smith has been a fan of DeForest Kelley for almost five decades. She has also meandered among his fans at numerous conventions and at individual and collective ceremonies honoring him and the science fiction series he helped forge into an iconic legend. She writes: "I have witnessed first-hand the enormous love and respect people have for De. And I continue to see, almost daily, how people have remained enchanted with him, even following his passing in 1999. Millions of people were immediately and acutely affected by his unanticipated death. Tens of thousands of them expressed outright anguish ' feelings akin to losing one's best friend or a family member. A single, cursory visit to just one of numerous DeForest Kelley websites (national and international) proves the veracity of this declaration.

"Categorically and undeniably, De became -- and will endure as -- one of the most-loved and best-remembered personalities in the world. His Dr. McCoy is at the heart of STAR TREK's mythology, and TREK is a tenacious mythology which will last until the day humans forget how to aspire to a higher standard for themselves and their progeny.

"De was my friend, but he was also my hero -- one of very few heroes whose durability was sorely tested, yet found to be utterly reliable. I wrote this book (DeFOREST KELLEY: A HARVEST OF MEMORIES) to show how deeply De influenced my life ' and to remind you, his fans and friends, how seamlessly and comfortably he fitted into yours.

"I undertook this endeavor for the millions of fans who never had the pleasure of meeting De 'up close and personal.' My sincerest goal for this book is that it will validate every intuition you ever had about DeForest Kelley being one of Hollywood's 'good guys.'"

Smith has been an animal welfare advocate and humane education staff worker and executive director, a wild and domestic animal caretaker, an animal rescue worker, an executive secretary at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, and an Activity Director at an assisted living facility. She was DeForest Kelley's personal assistant and caregiver at the end of his life.

For the past four years she has been a copywriter, creating riveting copy for businesses here at home and around the globe. Find out more at kristinemsmith.biz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Celebration of the Animal Kingdom, October 30, 2003

A Wonderful Celebration of the Animal Kingdom
To say that Kristine Smith is an animal advocate is an extreme understatement. She obviously eats, sleeps, breathes and lives to express her sincere dedication and admiration for both the wild and the domestic creatures with whom we share life on this planet. Kris has this uncanny way of touching just what we love most about animals, and in her book, 'Let No Day Dawn...,' is a wondrous celebration and expression of great insights into the way animals think and the way they touch our lives in so many ways. And who better to lead the celebration than the legendary DeForest Kelley, who, with his wife Carolyn, supported so many animal welfare causes. The poetry in this book sends chills down my spine; the stories makes me laugh (and cry); and the drawings by Emese Emoke Dian have me in awe of an artistic talent that truly captures the spirit of the animals she has chosen to illustrate.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Love of Animals, August 4, 2003

This review is from: Let No Day Dawn That the Animals Cannot Share (Paperback)
If you or someone you know has a genuine love and concern for animals, then this is a book to cherish. Having devoted much of her life to the love, caring, and well-being of domesticated and wild animals, she shares this compassion within her poetry. Additionally, from her numerous life experiences interacting with the animals, she shares a few very touching stories as well. Read about her observations of the elephants, seals, raccoons, tigers, coyotes, and so many more!!

Be prepared to laugh and to cry. The poetry will touch you deeply. It seems to draw you in and force you to really reflect on what is happening to these beautiful creatures. You will be moved, hopefully, to an awakening of the responsibility we all have to protect and care for the animals.

This is the ultimate in thoughtful, caring, and insightful gifts. And, believe me, along with the wonderful offerings by Kris, the cover page, photographs, and artwork within are awesome!! Be prepared to buy one to savor for yourself and some to share with others. It's well worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Animal Welfare Advocacy at Its Finest, August 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Let No Day Dawn That the Animals Cannot Share (Paperback)
I would like to make clear to prospective readers that the author of LET NO DAY DAWN is an animal welfare advocate. (Note: I said animal WELFARE, not animal rights, as some reviewers have stated.) Smith's book invites you into the lives and minds of animals -- and into the mind (and unique hands-on experiences) of a dedicated, down-to-earth lady who loves them and shows it --through commitment, strictly humane action, and unbridled passion.

The late actor DeForest Kelley was an animal welfare advocate; he and wife Carolyn supported the North Shore Animal League (NSAL) for many years. A portion of the proceeds from this book will benefit NSAL, The ROAR Foundation (Shambala Preserve), and other recognized national and international animal welfare organizations in memory of DeForest, to help support the ongoing commitment of these organizations' to animal welfare and advocacy.
