4.0 out of 5 stars It's About Trade and Diplomacy August 3, 2011
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Gold|Verified Purchase
In Dawn of Discovery you will find yourself landing on deserted islands with nothing more than a some lumber and a few tools. Your job is to colonize the island and attract settlers to work for you and pay taxes so that you can afford to improve and expand your colony while warding of those from outside who covet your wealth and success. That's the game in a nutshell.

Where all this gets interesting is that as your colony expands resources are required which are not native to your island. For instance, clothing is a necessity, but the hemp required to produce linen is not able to be cultivated everywhere. The choices are to sail out to discover suitable land for cultivation of that resource or trade with another player, AI or human. As your trade routes expand your networks can get fairly complicated. If one of your ships is attacked by corsairs or enemy players the disruption of materials can have a negative effect on the citizens of your colony. After too much deprivation they will either leave or start to rebel, running through your cobblestone streets burning and looting.

During the game the player is offered various quests in the form tasks such as escorting ships safely out of pirate infested waters or rescue people and cargo lost at sea. Getting these requests can be irritating when attempting to concentrate on the seven or eight trade routes required to bring in supplies in a timely manner for you colonists. As far as I can tell, these quests can be ignored without penalty.

I had to laugh when indigo shipments from the "Orient" became cut off leading to a shortage of printing ink and books in one of my colonies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good continuation January 23, 2011

If you liked previous Anno games you will like this one. I did not buy it at launch due to the DRM and the mandatory ubisoft login. All that has been removed now with the 3.0 patch. Be sure to patch immediately since I was not able to get the 1.0 game to recognize the serial number I received from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game-here's how to make it work if it doesn't January 5, 2012

Love the game, try the demo and see for yourself.

I had issues with poor framerate (0.9 fps?!??) on startup, which was really odd since the demo ran flawlessly at 40-60fps. After finding no help ANYWHERE online I discovered the solution; Anno4Web.exe or AddonWeb.exe. Killing these processes in task manager after the game starts or completely deleting these two files (for Gold edition after installation of the base game and the Venice expansion) solved the problem entirely. On my system (Win7 x64) they are located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Related Designs\Dawn of Discovery - Gold Edition\tools. Hope this helps someone play the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hours and hours March 2, 2011

I'm going to be honest, my wife hates this game because it is stealing me from her. There is a lot of micro-management, so it's not for everyone, but I do find it extremely engrossing. Seeing the balance of resources and planning and how everything has to work together to keep on the plus side of the budget and achieve the goals of the scenarios and the campaign is just fascinating to me. I highly recommend this game.

To PATCH this Dawn of Discovery Gold(I have the downloaded version may work as well for the boxed version) to the latest version it must be noted that downloaded patches from the internet for the gold edition won't work. No worries, just follow these steps..

1. You need to go into your C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Related Designs\Dawn of Discovery - Gold Edition folder or where you have the game installed and click gu.exe(short for Game Update). It will install a pre-patch then may start the game so just exit the game.

2. Then go back into the same folder and click gu.exe again and it will install the latest Dawn of Discovery Gold 1.3 patch. Your good to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable game August 6, 2011
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Gold|Verified Purchase
Had prior versions of this game. This one has more options and chalanges. Like the game because it does not require building for war. Each selection has a pro and con as to how the game will continue. The only problem is that it is a 32bit version and cannot access all the memory in a 64 bit computer. While I have 4 meg, it is only using 2 meg.

First off, I like this series. I played the original as a kid, and loved it. This game is a great upgrade. It is not perfect and it can be a little tedious, however if your are interested in creating and running a colony, this is the game to get. I was also VERY impressed by how quick, simple, and well-working Amazon's whole downloading process worked (just make sure to look on the Amazon website for the product key that needs to be entered for the game, this part of the installation was not very clear). I also recommend Tropico 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars Build IT January 6, 2011

I have played previous versions of this game - 1704. I enjoy this because you can downgrade the fighting. I like to BUILD. So, this is my game of choice. Previously I would not have bought a downloadable game but it went smooth and painless. Truth is, it was nice not to wait for "Snail mail" to play. I played within a few hours of buying the game.

This was my first Anno series game, and I loved it. It's a bit confusing to grasp at first, but I found it enjoyable. But be warned, this game can be quite a time sink.
