Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A historic document of desperate times from Canada's finest punk/hardcore band. Joe Keithley's minimally annotated 33-cut "complication" assembles three EPs, a slew of unreleased cuts (including a corrosive "Communications Breakdown") and the entire "Let's Wreck the Party• LP (1985). Essential. --Jeff Bateman

Product Description

A combination of early D.O.A. singles, an EP, and the 1985 Let's Wreck the Party full-length, The Dawning of a New Error is a nice early-career encapsulation for the first and perhaps foremost Canadian punk rock outfit. Originally released on Alternative Tentacles in 1985, this late-'70s/early-'80s retrospective captures the band in all its faux British accent, first wave of (Canadian) punk glory. The "Disco Sucks" material is utterly charming with its homespun production and obvious Sex Pistols influence. The remaining 29 (that's a total of 33) songs generally follow suit, charting the gradual evolution of D.O.A. Highlights include all the "Disco Sucks" tracks and "Race Riot," of which two versions are included. While the slicker production of the Let's Wreck the Party cuts does add an interesting sheen to the group's material, pop efforts like "Shout Out" are not enhanced by the studio sizzle. A great buy for hoarders of early D.O.A. material, The Dawning of a New Error is a good way to become familiar with the seminal '80s punkers. ~ Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best hardcore bands, August 12, 2011
By
This review is from: Dawning of a New Error (Audio CD)
I used to listen to hardcore punk back in the mid-'80s. Bands like Black Flag, The Exploited, Fear, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, The Sex Pistols, and D.O.A. provided my soundtrack for a couple of years. I was in a band during this time period. We started out as a straight rock band, recording three or four rock albums before we turned punk for a couple of albums. Our punk days were a lot of fun. D.O.A. was one of the more influential punk bands for us, along with Black Flag and Fear, mostly. D.O.A.'s album The Dawning Of A New Error (1985) is a 33-song barrage of hardcore punk with an attitude, spanning the years 1978-1985. The whole album is great, but my personal favorite tracks are "Disco Sucks" (it really does, by the way), "World War 3", "The Enemy", "My Old Man's A Bum", "Bloodsucker Baby", "New Wave Sucks", and "Let's Wreck The Party". The liner notes include the lyrics to each song.

Overall, this is a great punk album by a hardcore heavyweight. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 33 tracks and not self-indulgent, May 22, 2000
This review is from: Dawning of a New Error (Audio CD)
It's all here. Great, good, and 'thought you might want to hear this.' Some really funny tunes here such as "OO-EE-OO..." which is actually part of another song with the "new lyrics" sung over. Can you name it? "Trial By Media" and "Murder In Hollywood" hit the listener hard. The band, never one to pull any punches, lets the listener in on some of the events that the band has been part of. The cast of characters who played on the different tracks really ought to have their own books, but the music says enough for now.

3.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to this great hardcore ensemble., May 30, 1999

This is probably the best spot to jump into this band's discography to get some perspective as to why they were the hardest rockin' politically pissed off bunch of canucks you'd ever wanna meet. There's lots of rare tracks you'd have hocked body parts to get, back in the 80's (wish I had'nt).
