Book Description

January 15, 1991
Colin G. Calloway collects, for the first time, documents describing the full range of encounters of Indians and Europeans in northern New England during the Colonial era. His comprehensive and highly readable introduction to the subject of Indian and European interaction in northern New England covers early encounters, missionary efforts, diplomacy, war, commerce, and cultural interchange and features a wide range of primary sources, including narratives, letters, account books, treaties, and council proceedings.

Together with period illustrations, the documents testify to the richness and variety of the inter-ethnic relations in northern New England. They also show that while conflict certainly occurred, the encounters were also marked by cooperation and accommodation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The important areas of association are . . . presented without condemning or glorifying either Native Americans or settlers. Calloway's documents represent a picture of human beings in a complex environment of cultural interchange, interchange marked by conflict and competition, but also by cooperation, mutual respect, and accommodation."--Choice

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Historical Accounts of Interactions between Europeans and Native Americans., June 22, 2007
This review is from: Dawnland Encounters: Indians and Europeans in Northern New England (Paperback)
This book contains many accounts of interactions between Native American tribes and Europeans. The accounts are all based on narratives written from the first arrival of Europeans until approximately The French and Indian War. It clarifies that Europeans and natives interacted in a vareity of ways and at different times were friendly or unfriendly towards each other. The French and English also brought their conflicts into the mix as the natives may have brought their conflicts too. A main concern is religion for the Europeans - The French want Catholic Indians and the English protestant ones. Alcohol was a drug easily promoted for trading purposes. When natives became hooked, the price went up. Captives with the natives were often viewed with suspicion and many English chose to live with the natives or with the French after awhile. A very interesting book.
