Never watched this while it was on originally, so glad I'm watching it now!

I ordered this about a month ago and have just finished watching the fifth season. One more season to go.
Because I never watched the show before, I don't notice any changes. Having no emotional attachment to the original songs or the ability to notice missing scenes, I was able to watch without getting worked up about either of those things. I like the packaging. Once you get a system going, it's not that hard to deal with. The DVDs are "stacked" on top of each other, three seasons on one side and three seasons on the other. I just watched the top disk and when I finished it, I put that disk on the bottom of the stack. You'll see when you get the box how it's set up.
All disks were unscratched and all have played with no problems.
Now, the show itself. The first four seasons were like a GREAT book you could not put down. Honestly, I haven't been this addicted to anything since the Harry Potter books! The acting is really surpisingly good. All the main cast did a very nice job of portraying high school students. And that love triangle with Dawson/Joey/Pacey was the best I've ever seen anything like that done. Ever. I won't spoil it for anyone who's never watched, but let's just say that the very end of season 3 had me standing up and cheering.
Season 4 was also very good as our cast moved toward graduating. The supporting adult cast was great, the kids were right on target. Words fail me as to how effective this cast was as sucking you in.
Season 5. Boy, I don't even know what to say. It had its moments here and there, but it felt like a completely different show. The 90210 kids went off to college, but didn't leave L.A., so it was different enough without doing a complete 180. This Dawson's Creek college thing was just bizarre. I like the addition of Busy Phillips as Joey's roommate, but Pacey, Joey, and Jack were unrecognizable. I'm not sure what I just watched, but it wasn't Dawson's Creek. I skimmed through a lot, because I just didn't care about the characters outside of the original circle. With 90210, I think they did a better job at introducing new characters along the way that felt like part of the cast. Probably because the cast still felt like the same cast. You'll know when you get to season 5 what I'm talking about. It was jarring.
I don't know anything about season 6, but I am looking forward to the big grand series finale. I ordered the extended version in addition to this box set, because I've read that it was worth it and the ultimate end of the show is apparently going to satisfy my 'ship preference! I'll want to draw that out as long as possible.
If you're new to the series, get it. It's so much better than ANYTHING that is on television today.
