2.0 out of 5 stars It just never grabbed me
I borrowed this book from the library and thought it would be a good read. I just never got into it and found myself skimming through (once I realized it was basically about her days home alone with two kids while missing her husband). I read/skimmed about halfway through, then just quit reading totally. Her husband is in Iraq, which I agree is very stressful, but she...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, December 4, 2008
This review is from: The Day After He Left for Iraq: A Story of Love, Family, and Reunion (Hardcover)
I appreciate the open and honest reality of life as a military spouce and mother that this book shares. This is a great tribute to mothers and spouces that gives a small insight to our lives. The book is for a wide audience, not just military. Showing some of the many thoughts, experiences and things we have in common with each other as wives and mothers is well depicted in the book. Not only did I read the book, but my husband did as well. Thank you to the author and her family for sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for all military wives!, August 28, 2009
This review is from: The Day After He Left for Iraq: A Story of Love, Family, and Reunion (Hardcover)
I just spent the afternoon reading this book and consider it time well spent. I feel as though I spent the afternoon with the author reliving her experience- sharing the laughter, tears, frustration, and joy. I have already shared parts of the story with friends- and they received a warm laugh or connection. I think every military wife should read this book- and suggest it to friends. By the end- the author feels like your friend-the sign of a very well written and honest book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Family War Story, May 26, 2009
This review is from: The Day After He Left for Iraq: A Story of Love, Family, and Reunion (Hardcover)
If you think you know the story of Army wives, think again. This book takes you through every gut-wrenching step of a deployment from the soldier's family's viewpoint. Wives and children pay the highest price when daddy leaves for war. Author Melissa Seligman doesn't hold anything back, freely sharing sorrow, worry, anger, depression, and recovery. When you sit down to read this book, don't expect to get up without finishing. Grab your handkerchief, and maybe a stiff drink, and as you read remember the thousands upon thousands of American families who are living the same story.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how it is, whether we say it or not, July 1, 2011
This book is an honest representation of a real deployment. It is the good, the bad, and the ugly.........it has an almost stream of consciousness feeling to it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an accurate idea of what military spouses go through.......and recommend it for military spouses so that we know we are not alone in our experiences.

As a fellow Army Wife, I sympathize with the author. I've been her in this story. But it is like a woe me story, and I was hoping for something more morale boosting instead of depressing. Good story though, and it will make you cry.

I borrowed this book from the library and thought it would be a good read. I just never got into it and found myself skimming through (once I realized it was basically about her days home alone with two kids while missing her husband). I read/skimmed about halfway through, then just quit reading totally. Her husband is in Iraq, which I agree is very stressful, but she also has the luxury of staying home with two children and not having to work out of the home. Could you imagine her life if she had to work full-time with two small children as a single parent? She also talked with her husband daily, interacted with him on the computer and got letters, so he did remain, to some degree, a part of her daily life (this wouldn't have been true for earlier wars). It just seemed a very self-pitying book to me - perhaps she would have been better off mentally if she had gotten out of the house more and made adult friends so that it wasn't just her and the children and constantly worrying about her husband (and being reminded of him because of the kids).
