A locomotive without breaks,
By Jeff Edwards (rmgomske@lightcom.net) (Twin Falls, Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Day After Tomorrow (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and as I found out, they were a very GOOD friend. I have NEVER EVER found a book that was launched into action as quickly as this...IF by chance YOU know of one that does, PLEASE e-mail me and let me know. WOW! I can't TELL you how many times my jaw was opened in awe of the sheer speed this plot takes, and how fantastic it all was, but through it all you were persuaded to suspend your belief and just take it all in just because it was bloody good fun. The very last verse alone is worth the price of the book--but PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T read it in advance and spoil it. A GREAT story and a GREAT book. Unfortunately his 2nd novel 'Day of Confession' wasn't as compelling, but still it was entertaining. Check this book out and clear away your schedules, especially if you are a slow reader, 'cuz you WON'T want to put it down. Folsom has written a book that Ludlum MIGHT have written in HIS prime had his career started in the early 90's instead of the early 70's. TRUST me, that's high praise indeed.

One of the all-time great page-turners,

Just an unbelievable story from beginning to end. Make sure to pick it up on a weekend and don't make any plans until you're finished. Great plot twists, engaging characters, and an all-around thriller throughout. I would say it's similar in structure to the Da Vinci Code, with short chapters and multiple plot twists; in comparison, though, I preferred The Day After Tomorrow...maybe my favorite novel.

A book you can't put down.,
This review is from: The Day After Tomorrow (Mass Market Paperback)
You know you are reading a good book when you glance at the clock and see that it's 2am and don't care that you have to get up for work in four hours. The Day After Tommorrow is one of those books. It is a myserious and fast-paced thriller that can stand up to the best works of Ludlum. This is a definite must-have for any political/espionage thriller lover.

Thrills at times, but overlong,

This review is from: The Day After Tomorrow (Mass Market Paperback)
Allan Folsom's THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW jump-starts on the first page when Paul Osborn, in a Paris cafe, sees across the room the man who killed his father and gives chase. Over the next 725 (!) pages he continues that chase, which pulls him into the midst of an international conspiracy peopled by various criminals and comrades from France, the U.S., Germany, and Switzerland. An entertaining read. Folsom has a nice way of interrupting the mundane with matter-of-fact horror. Still, there are long sections that could easily have been cut -- this should have been a 400-page book. Some of the plot twists are ludicrous, the good luck of some of the characters entirely unbelievable, but enjoy the book nonetheless. One other note -- the book is marred by numerous typos that should have been corrected in the paperback edition. A good beach read, or save it for a long, long train ride.

What a Ride!,

From the first page until the last, this book never slows down. The twists and turns Folsom takes you through make this a ride soon not to be forgotten. And the ending added the final punch to complete the mystery.I really enjoyed this book and I am sure you will too. It really was very hard to put down.

Spy novel and detective novel all rolled up into one,
By Todd Nisoff (Manchester, Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Day After Tomorrow (Mass Market Paperback)
This could be the best book I have read and I have read hundreds of books of all genres. It is a combination of an excellent spy thriller and a well-written detective novel. It lost a star because it's about fifty pages too long, but the ending was well worth the trip. Some of the plot twists are of the variety "I should have seen it coming but I didn't."

Before Dan Brown ...,

This review is from: The Day After Tomorrow (Mass Market Paperback)
There was Allan Folsom. I first read this book 13 years ago when it first came out and still remember it as a fast-paced novel. I picked it up recently after recommending it to a friend to see if I still enjoyed it. I enjoyed it but not like I did 13 years ago. Either my reading taste has matured, or he's just not that good of an author. However, it is a fast-paced novel and fun to read. It's definitely perfect for the summer hiatus when all one can think of is sitting outside by the kiddie pool and read.Paul Osborn, an American surgeon was just sitting in a cafe thinking about his current state of affairs when he looks up and sees the man who killed his father 30 years previously. When he goes after him, he sets off an international goose chase all across Europe that sends spine-curdling thrills coursing through your body. He meets up with Detective McVey, who is from LA also, but is in London on a bizarre case involving headless bodies and one head with a missing body. Somehow Paul and McVey link up together and set off to figure out the baffling case that needed to be solved before the world is thrown into terror it has never seen before. It's fast. It's intense. It still delivers a punch after 13 years of sitting in my bookcase. If you like suspense and dark thrillers, you'll like this one. I didn't find it lagging one minute anywhere ~~ in fact, I couldn't wait to finish it again. 5-24-03

Outstanding,

One of the best books I have ever read. The plot will remind you of a Ludlum novel (a good one), but the characters and dialogue are far superior to the wooden action figures and one dimensional villians that Ludlum produces.

An American doctor, while being in Paris, sees the man who killed his father and thus finds himself caught in a conspiracy that may bring back to power the old glory of the Nazi Germany. As he tries to find the truth behind all of this, he races across Europe and faces forces greater and more powerful than he could ever imagine. The secrets become clear at each chapter, the action and the races across the Old Continent superbly detailed. A satisfying first effort from Folsom and an excellent thriller.

"OH MY GOD" were the worlds i said as this book fell out of my hands when i read the closing line. this book owned my life for 5 days where i would do little more than sit and read. anyone who loves thrillers, conspiracys, or "take over the world" plots needs to read this book. This book has you going from beginning to end, and not until the last line do you finally have the privelage of knowing the truth, and what a truth it is........
