Editorial Reviews

A favorite on the New York mixtape circuit, Brooklyn rapper Maino, grew up in the borough's Bedford-Stuyvesant section and had a rough childhood. Lacking parental guidance, Maino kept to the streets and involved himself in petty crime, which landed him in prison in the early '90s. There he learned to rap so that he could deal with boredom and isolation. In 2003, after about ten years, he was released from prison and wasted no time setting up his new imprint, Hustle Hard. Maino enjoyed his first airplay on N.Y.C. radio via Hot 97's DJ Kay Slay and began making several mixtape appearances during the following years. From his own mixtapes, street singles like Rumors and Take It Like a Man got his name buzzing among major labels, including Universal, who signed him in 2005. However, the deal eventually fell through, since his intended debut album, Death Before Dishonor, was permanently shelved. Nonetheless, Atlantic picked up Maino and his Hustle Hard imprint in 2007 and the Brooklyn native quickly issued street single My Life Is Like a Movie that year. Another track, Hi Hater, surfaced the following year, prefacing his major-label debut, If Tomorrow Comes... 2009.

Maino reclaims his mainstream success with the new infectious single, That Could Be Us. The smooth bass-thumping track is the second single from his much anticipated sophomore effort, The Day After Tomorrow.

This release follows Mainos successful first album If Tomorrow Comes, which spawned his explosive anthems Hi Hater and Million Bucks featuring Swizz Beatz. The celebrated debut album also featured his platinum-plus selling chart-topper, All the Above featuring T-Pain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love some of his songs and his interview, too March 10, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Judging from the recent Breakfast Club interview I heard, Maino has been out for awhile, but I had not a clue who he was until I heard "That Could Be Us" on the radio. I went home and downloaded that song the same day I heard it, and then I started digging around to see what else he put out. When I heard his full CD on a "Listening Party" (can't say the site), I felt like hip hop had been missing a great artist. Although I ended up picking and choosing mp3 singles instead of buying the whole CD, I'm still happy to support his music. The entire CD is good, but I wanted my favorite songs, which are "That Could Be Us" (obviously), "Gangstas Ain't Dead" and "Cream."

I feel like women needed some type of positive song and Maino gave us that. For awhile in 2011, I kept saying I was absolutely DONE with hip hop. It seemed like the insults went into overdrive, but when artists come out with songs like this, it makes me rethink my position. It was a nice balance. Not whining. Not overly sympathetic. Still a little edgy. But definitely a pretty romantic song, especially for hip-hop, which is NOT known to be charismatic since Big Daddy Kane stepped into the shadows.

"Gangstas Ain't Dead" has a hot beat to be so laidback, but it's the lyrics that really get me. Anybody who has dealt with enough foul people will quickly relate to "I keep my friends close, my enemies more closer." Although he definitely comes off more positive in The Breakfast Club interview, I can't be mad at him for being conscious of his past. You don't have to grow up in the hood to relate, although those that do probably will more than others. (Note: He does mention those who are in the hood aren't necessarily of it, but you get my point.)

"Cream" is a song I'm surprised I like. I usually hate ode-to-money songs, but I was listening to this at work and thinking the same thing. I can always respect someone who is focused on bettering themselves financially (by legal standards), and an anthem about it is all right with me. T.I.'s verse compliments the track, too. Akoo fashion is always winning when I see it in ads. (I could go without the b-word though.)

I could go without the n-word and calling women the h-word in "Cream" but considering there's no edited version for that song, I made do and ignored it. (I RARELY DO that so Maino is definitely the exception to the rule.)

The rest of the songs were cool, too. I listened to the entire CD a few times, and I'm neutral on them. I could probably get the CD and listen to it straight through. Would I recommend it? I'd recommend listening to it first to see if it's your cup of tea. If not, I'd be very surprised if one couldn't find at least a few jams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally his sophomore major label album - maybe 4.5 stars December 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Finally his sophomore major label album gets to see the light of day after a few pushbacks and delays. It's been a few months short of 3 years since his last major label album (his major label debut) was released, and this one is another very good album probably worthy of a low 4.5 star rating (slightly above his "The One and Only" and a little below "If Tomorrow Comes". I first heard of Maino back in spring/summer of 2003 on some DJ Kay Slay & Street Sweepers mixtapes and was immediately a fan; reminding me of Saigon, Papoose, or an early 50 Cent in the sense that they all are all good or great lyricists who make great street songs and can make nice personal deep ones as well and even a softer one here and there about the ladies. A few years of that he finally started blessing us all by putting out albums. This is the 4th album of his that I own, and here is how I rate it among his others:

(9/08) -- "The One and Only" -- 4/4.5 stars
(6/09) -- "If Tomorrow Comes" -- high 4.5 stars
(3/10) -- "Unstoppable" -- 4 stars

This one has 14 songs on it, and content wise, it's similar to "If Tomorrow Comes"; you have some street songs, some deep and personal tracks, some more radio friendly ones and some for the ladies. Guests are on 10 of the 14 songs; rapping on 3 and doing the chorus on 7. You get 1 classic, 2 near-classics, 4 average, and 7 good or real good songs, none on here I'd skip over. Production is pretty solid and handled by a good deal of different people. Blast Off does 4 songs, Mista Raja does 2, and: Buckwild, GQ Beats, Gorilla Tek, A-Squared, Sean St. Cyer, Dangerous LLC, The Arcade, The Colleagues all do 1 song. Again, an album I'd recommend picking up from an always impressive rapper.

#2 - 9.5 (f/ J-Son --- deeper lyrics over a tight beat)
#3 - 9.5 (another tight beat)
#4 - 8
#5 - 10 (Classic f/ Mista Raja -- deep, personal track about him growing up and doing time - great beat)
#6 - 6.5 (f/ uncredited person on the chorus)
#7 - 8.5 (f/ Push Montana & Mouse)
#8 - 7 (f/ T.I. & Meek Mills -- pretty annoying chorus with a simple, radio-friendly beat)
#9 - 7.5 (f/ Roscoe Dash doing a radio-friendly sounding hook)
#10 - 7.5 (f/ Robbie Nova -- more relaxing beat and geared more toward the ladies)
#12 - 8 (f/ another uncredited person on the hook who sounds a lot like Rihanna)
#13 - 9 (nice beat -- another deeper song)
#14 - 8.5 (f/ J-Son)
#15 - 9 (deeper, personal lyrics)
#16 - 8.5 (f/ Paul Rivers Bailey)

Jermaine Coleman --- Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY --- b. around 1978

4.0 out of 5 stars ...has a little something for everyone July 7, 2012
By Dutch
Format:Audio CD
This is a pretty solid album, basically continuing from Maino's first/previous album, documenting his life after making it and his emotions. The production is sound but a little generic; the beats have more of a mainstream appeal. It fits Maino well and his rather cohesive as a whole. Maino, from a lyrical standpoint, is merely adequate. His lyrics are relevant, deep, and he holds a topic well but there is nothing complicated or impressive with it. He documents his journey with stardom and his emotions well but the album is sprinkled with generic rap tracks, which is not necessarily a bad thing as the album transitions nicely. This album has a little something for everyone, well put together.
