Book Description

This children's book describes the events of 9/11/01 and in the weeks that follow. It tells a story different from what is likely to be told in history books. It captures the moments as they were lived without generating fear and provides a message of hope and courage.

The book focuses not only on the events themselves but our reactions to the events such as emotions, acts of kindness and our need to continue onward in spite of fear and uncertainty. It attempts to explain why 9/11 occurred without prejudice.

The story is accompanied by graphics (black and white) that are meant to keep the children's interest. The events appear to be told by a cheerful cat who finds his way onto each page of the text as well as onto the full page illustrations.

Children between ages 7 and 9 years old will likely be able to read this book alone. However, the material in the book can be utilized into classroom lessons on 9/11, as well as those on citizenship, for older and younger school-aged children as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Top of My List, August 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Day America Cried (Paperback)
Purchased and promptly returned this book. Was looking for materials to read to elementary school children as part of a 9/11 Memorial project. Book talked down to kids and ending every section with the same phrase about America crying. There are much better children books than this one about 9/11.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all ages!, December 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day America Cried (Paperback)
This book is helpful in explaining the tragedy of September 11th to children and dealing with the feelings of loss, sadness, anger, and insecurity in the aftermath. While geared toward the younger generation, this is actually a must-read for all ages. Parents can read it to their children or see the images that are educational but not frightening. For those too young to truly comprehend what happened, this book, which is told from the point of view of a friendly cat, is full of information but also designed in such a way that kids will not be turned off. Highly recommended!
