5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Inclusive and Transforming, October 31, 2004
This review is from: A Day Apart: Shabbat at Home (Paperback)
The book is simply the best and most practical guide to understanding the essence of Shabbat in the home. Its intelligent and non-dogmatic approach provides a framework for observance in the home for the beginner to the most experienced. It includes eloquent and enriching passages from leading Jewish thinkers that include among others, Rashi, Maimonides, Kaplan, Heschel, Wolpe and Teluskin. It's a strikingly beautiful and user-friendly book for our times. While taking the reader step-by-step through traditional ritual and custom, its authors also describe such mundane considerations from how to deal with last minute preparations before guests arrive to what to do when your child inadvertently spills the Kiddush cup. The book is a must purchase for those in search of making their Shabbat a more complete and meaningful experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Apart, September 6, 2010

This review is from: A Day Apart: Shabbat at Home (Paperback)
Too many people miss out on what makes the Sabbath/Shabbat special. Some don't know much or any Hebrew. Some don't have the time for a big meal. And some just don't know what the Shabbat is about. This book is for them.

Too many people are stuck in a rut doing the same thing every Friday night, but are not enjoying it. This book is for them.

Some people understand the Shabbat and enjoy it. And this book is for them too.

This book is not about teaching rituals, although it can be used for that. This book is about creating family traditions and memories. The authors have compiled a book that provides a structure for those who need it, but the main thing they have done is shown how anyone can enhance their Friday nights, and their whole week in the process, by taking some time to gather and enjoy family and friends with help from the Sages of old and from moderns as well.

We have used this book for several years. We have adopted some prayers as "ours", we use readings from the book some weeks, and we have added prayers that were suggested by the book. It has enhanced our home and our love for each other. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
