Brendan James is a bit of a departure from my normal listening preferences, but I wanted to branch out a little. The Day Is Brave turned out to be an interesting choice for doing so. 3.0 out of 5 stars melancholic singer/songwriter
Brendan James "the Day is Brave" shows off his poetic lyrical talent and likeable voice, yet is musically somewhat dreary. He sounds to me like a depressed James Blunt, and even the songs toward the later half of the disc that are more upbeat don't generate much melody or engagement. With the lyrical skills present on this album I see significant potential for James. I...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Confluence Of Honest, Heartfelt Songs, August 5, 2008
This review is from: The Day Is Brave (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Brendan James is a bit of a departure from my normal listening preferences, but I wanted to branch out a little. The Day Is Brave turned out to be an interesting choice for doing so. You will not find high energy rock, up-tempo blues, or the twang of folk/country on this CD. No, the focal point of The Day Is Brave is James himself be it his vocals, lyrics, or piano playing.

Vocally, Brendan James has a very smooth, rich baritone voice. He has good range and rhythmic variety, yet his delivery is clear and easy to understand. When he sings, it reminds of Elton John or George Michael but with a somewhat deeper voice. Like both of these artists, James sings with a great deal of emotion because...

Lyrically, James wears his emotions on his sleeve. On "The Other Side" he contrasts what he has become against the struggles of growing up as a kid who didn't fit in - "Oh Mother, look how your boy turned out/300 miles from that small town." "Green" and "Early April Morning" are both songs where James works out his past love experiences. While these are typical songs to find an artist write about, James does rise above the everyday with his protest of the Iraq war, "Hero's Song". Here he gives the perspective of the front line soldier who has been to Iraq. (I am merely informing the reader of the songs content, and it is not my purpose to state agreement or disagreement. Each individual must decide for themselves where they stand on this matter without my influence one way or the other.) Combining the vocal delivery and lyrics, one cannot mistake the fact that the subjects that Brendan James sings about are very important to him.

Instrumentally, James piano playing is the centerpiece of the CD. While he is supported by typical guitar, bass, and percussion instrumentalists, none of these are what sticks with you after listening to the The Day Is Brave. It is the piano that completes the picture started by the lyrics and vocal delivery.

While this is not a CD that I will listen to on an everyday basis, I do think it is good for what it is. The music is not high energy, but I would not call it relaxing either - unless you intend to ignore the lyrics. No, it is too thought provoking for that. However, when we find ourselves inundated with mindless drivel, we must acknowledge that which rises above it. Is this CD for you? Maybe... It depends.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album above the rest, August 9, 2008
This review is from: The Day Is Brave (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Brendan James has a great voice that has depth and range. His songs also have good melodies that go beyond the typical songs of today. There are not many songs on The Day is Brave that stretch the limits in terms of depth, but it does have excellent melodies. Put that together with stories that his songs tell and you have a great album. "Green" is a great start to the album, it's upbeat and sets a good feel for the rest of the songs.

"Hero's Song" is an example of James' songs are better at telling stories. It's not a song that just repeats over and over. It's a story that has a slower tempo accompanying it. "The Other Side" has a more varied beat and strays a little bit from the other songs, but I consider it to be a great addition.

Some people think that Brendan James' songs all sound the same, but I certainly disagree. I think they offer plenty of melody, depth (in both tone and meaning), and tempo. This is a great album that has plenty of songs that will be played over and over. It's great to have a CD with 10-11 great songs instead of just 2 or 3. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a tender, beautiful ache in the heart, August 10, 2008

Put the CD on Play, and the sounds of a piano plays, then the voice of a guy who speaks his soul, who sings his heart out and you just cannot help but listen and fall deep in love with the lyrics and the music, which all blends together so well, like it was meant to be something you hear on the radio, every s i n g l e day.

***Like a tender, beautiful ache in the heart***
- that's what Brendon James's voice sounds like to me. It's a natural smooth voice that soothes and cools, it's hard to describe - you just have to hear it.

I haven't been amazed by any artists in awhile and I listen to alot of new music on the radio, from the media/movies/tv and even online streams, you don't hear a pureness like you do from James's voice and his music. When you hear his music, it's not the stories told in his honest lyrics that grab you first, it's the tone, the instrumental and atmosphere of his music that lures you in, and then you start listening and hearing and understand his songs.

I love that Brendan James is a singer, but mainly that he is also a writer of his own music, that seems to be a rare talent these days. His stories flow, and are very emotional from his voice and it pulls you in the more you listen.

"The Day Is Brave" is a wonderful CD - romantic, calming, tragic, touching and so raw in a human way. I'm glad to have discovered Brendan James, and I hope you'll give him a listen. May James continue to sing and write passionately for many many CDs to come so that we may continue to enjoy his talent for many many years!

5.0 out of 5 stars New Favorite Album!, June 3, 2008
This review is from: The Day Is Brave (Audio CD)
Wow, this is my new favorite. Just all around great. Every single song is touching for it's own reason... songs about childhood, a song for our soldiers, songs about love... Brendan really bares his soul on this album with humility and grace. The songs are so beautiful and so catchy, and all the lyrics are meaningful and well-written. Brendan James is going to really make it big, I wouldn't be surprised if I started to see him everywhere... he's been blessed with a real talent for song writing, and a heartwarming sincerity (not to mention that he's remarkably easy on the eyes) ;) I already have the song "Green" completely stuck in my head. Thank you, thank you, Brendan James.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brendan James - The Day is Brave 4.5, February 4, 2010
This review is from: The Day Is Brave (Audio CD)
This album resonates the words of a young and trusted song writer.
I was sold on his single, "Green". However, you need to listen past Green and dive through the entire album.

This album is just beautiful. You can enjoy it from many angles; listen to the piano playing; listen to the words as the flow like poetry, or put it all together for a wonderful ride.

Try it - he's got something unique - that you just might enjoy!

I have about 2300 albums and this one is at the top. I am not a pro critic. but I know what I like. Brendan music is thought provoking and right now in my life, it fits me. There are artists who perform with the music and just bang, bang, bang and the song is over. Brendan's voice like an instrument and the words are well thought and they flow extremely well with the piano and band. The more I listen to it the more I like it. If you like good, with a somewhat depressive darker edge melodically blended with smooth Piano, I recommend this album. I would compare to a modern day Joshua Kadison, but better. It is mellow music with extremely good vocals. This CD will last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you, November 13, 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
At first I thought,I've heard this all before but after more playings, the thoughtful, insightful lyrics started to speak to me and Brendan's beautiful tenor baritone caught in my mind. There's some very nice work on this CD and if you'll listen a few times it will start to grow on you as well. There is magic here. This man definitely has real talent.

Brendan james' album won't hit you at first as anything revolutionary or energetic. But give it a second spin and chances are you'll be coming back for more. The songs grow in you, not slowly but steadily, until you can easily find yourself doing something at home or at your desk and thinking... where is that CD again?

And that maybe precisely its biggest strength and obvious flaw. Songs emotional to get you interested but played in an understated fashion slightly similar to James Taylor or even Carole King's mellower compositions. Somethings you feel like listening to Tracy Chapman due to Brendan's soulful tone and sometimes you feel the Boss himself, yes, that Bruce Springsteen has recorded some piano sessions with some dear friends and decided to release it under a different name. It's that good, yet at the same time, is an album that needs to be enjoyed over time, not on one song repeats nor on sit-down-and-devote-all-my-attention-to-it mode... but as a soft companion to focus on your work at your desk, or on working around the house.

You'll enjoy it if you enjoy music like Diana Krall's and want a soulful male voice over pop overtones instead of the jazzy funk.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Day is Brave and The Singer is Good, August 16, 2008
This review is from: The Day Is Brave (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Carly Simon has been quoted as giving Brendan James 2 thumbs up. (My words not her's.) And when you put the cd on you immediately agree with her. He has a voice that seems like it would be right at home on a country album but also equally comfortable with a jazz band too. But he thankfully has chosen neither. Instead we have a cd with 11 soulful tracks.
Now this is honestly not my style of music. I am more of a Rock and Roll guy. But at the same time I recognize a good artist when I see one, and Brendan James is going places. If you are going to do piano pop music this is what it should sound like......
