Essential for your Workshop!,

This review is from: Day-to-Day Assessment in the Reading Workshop: Making Informed Instructional Decisions in Grades 3-6 (Paperback)
I am a relatively new recruit to the workshop model and this book is absolutely essential to provided guidance for teachers making that transition. Everything from the importance of an engaging read-aloud (as opposed to the students sitting there passively listening) to student-initated conferences and groups to mini-lessons are included in this great resource. It could be a quick read but I savored it a chapter at a time to really allow myself to reflect on my current practices and begin planning how to change up my instruction to best meet the needs of every child in my classroom, from those struggling 2-3 grade levels below in reading to those excelling and reading middle school text. This book is fantastic!

Excellent Reading Workshop Resource!,
This review is from: Day-to-Day Assessment in the Reading Workshop: Making Informed Instructional Decisions in Grades 3-6 (Paperback)
This book is full of specific, helpful information that supports teachers in creating a strong reading workshop and in planning their reading instruction for the school year. It includes great tips in preparing for the 1st six weeks of workshop. It has a helpful section on how to gather relevant information/data about our students' reading lives. The chapters on independent reading, read aloud, mini lessons for whole-class and small group instruction, conferencing and share time are relevant, and provide great examples for classroom instruction. Franki has great insights about how to support students in becoming stronger, more thoughtful readers, and these suggestions are timely and practical. The appendix includes various recording sheets to use within the reading workshop. For those looking to promote stronger reading routines, or to fine-tune aspects of your reading workshop, this is a great resource! I highly recommend it, especially for upper elementary teachers.
