Book Description

4 and up
One morning, the family dog comes downstairs dressed exactly like Dad. The dog does a few things just like Dad would, but he also has a more canine approach to life that makes for quite an interesting day: he refuses to cook hot dogs at their barbecue, and in the evening he brings himself his own paper and slippers. His goodnight kiss is more of a lick, but the kids agree it sure was fun having the dog dress like Dad. Maybe tomorrow the cat will dress like Mom! A hilarious and imaginative tale sure to make every kid wonder what life would be like if Dad took a day off.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–When Dad goes out of town, the family dog takes his place. Coming downstairs in the man's clothing, the pooch exhibits the same early morning grouchiness as his master. During a family picnic, his canine nature surfaces and he chases a cat and barks out orders (like Dad). Back at home, he barbecues (but refuses to cook hot dogs). In the evening, he brings himself slippers and a newspaper and gives the children a goodnight lick. They are so delighted with the day's turnabout that they go off to bed hoping that the cat will dress like Mom the next day. Full-page cartoon illustrations in watercolor and black markers carry out the text's absurdity. A fun, but additional purchase.–Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog Dressed Like a Dad is Hysterical!!!, September 10, 2004

This review is from: The Day the Dog Dressed Like Dad (Hardcover)
I was attracted to the cute cover of this book and thought my kids would like the story line of a dog that dressed like a dad...especially since we have a dog of our own. My 7 and 9 year old girls giggled out loud and LOVED this story. If you're looking for a bedtime story that ends the day with a smile, I'd recommend this book to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip it., May 1, 2007
This review is from: The Day the Dog Dressed Like Dad (Hardcover)
Book category: "cynical books that adults think are witty but erode children's world views"

Examples:
1) Dad is rude to the family. (page 4)
2) Mom is rude to Dad. (page 6)
3) Dad is rude to his children. (page 14)
4) Dad is a stereotypical lout. (page 25)
5) Children mock clueless dad. (page 26)

Gee, real fun and witty. (No wonder, as of this writing, there are 68 used copies for sale, worth just a handful of dimes.)

At least that's the view from someone out here in fly-over country.

Although only 4, my daughter thought this book was the funniest thing she had ever read. Who ever heard of the family pet doing all the things Dad should be doing?? The illustrations are wonderful, and the story will appeal to kids of all ages. In a child's world of vivid imagination, this book fits in perfectly! I can't wait to pick more up for holiday gifts!
