Great Disc,
By Dave Bonofiglio (Milwaukee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Day Dream (Audio CD)
This is a great disc. The simplicity of the duo is wonderful. Tommy and Harry are excellent at jiving together. A CHild Is Born is my favorite track on the disc. Its great for quiet evenings at home. Definately buy this if you have any desire at all to listen to real jazz.

Swingin' bee,
This review is from: Day Dream (Audio CD)
I bought this CD in European edition that seems quite equal to the japanese (with the same bonus track), so I guess I can add my few nickles into this discussion...
Yes, this is a really swinging date; Allen at moments sounds like Ben Webster (the breethy quality of tone at some points), at moments even like Lester Young, but basically he is a genuine mainstream swing musician; with probable influences ranging from Coleman Hawkins and Zoot Sims to Stan Getz. With more than adequate support (Tommy Flanagan on piano!), this CD gives great listening pleasure, although it is one star bellow many of swing and mainstream albums by Young or Webster one can still purchase and enjoy... It is however quite nice to hear new interpreations of an older idiom, something important on its own, but also very significant even for the future of jazz - new generations of musicians often look to past styles for inspiration; look at Wynton Marsalis or even, to the extent Ornette Coleman (see "Change of the Century")... Allen's overdubbing of himself on "I'm chacking out, goodbye" was a pleasant surprise...
